Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Thirty-Three
Patrona del Uruguay
His name reminds the Thirty-Three Orientals, who put under the protection of the Virgin the beginning of the homeland. She is the national patron of Uruguay, venerated in Florida.
Origin and history
The small image, of colonial origin, has been venerated in Florida since the 18th century. His title reminds the "Thirty-Three Orientals" that, in 1825, when they began the gestures for independence, they entrusted their cause to the protection of the Virgin, linking this advocation to the history of Uruguay forever.
Over time, devotion was consolidated as the country's main. St. John Paul II canonically crowned the image during his visit to Florida in 1988, confirming Our Lady of the Thirty and Three as the national patron of Uruguay. His sanctuary is a pilgrimage center throughout the country.
