In Sunnybank, south of Brisbane, the advocation of Our Lady of Lourdes is not a generic attribution to the city: it gives name to a concrete and living Catholic parish. The Archdiocese of Brisbane officially identifies it, offers its direction and places the temple at the coordinates that accompany this fact sheet.

From a local church to a parish

The history of the parish educational community indicates that a Catholic church had already been built in the area in 1938. At that time Sunnybank was part of a wider territory attended from the parish of Saint Brendan in Moorooka. The dedication gathered the names of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Teresa, as the parish bulletin of the patron's feast recalls.

In January 1952, he opened a parish school in a military barracks divided into two classrooms. Josefin sisters Macrina Monaghan and Lucille Mohr attended the top forty-nine students and traveled daily by train from Moorooka. The school shows how the parish grew through a close union between liturgy, education and family life.

Sunnybank was erected as a separate parish in 1955 and his first parish priest was Father James Brosnan. Under his impulse, community volunteers participated in the construction of a brick convent and new classrooms. The religious were able to settle in the convent in 1958 and the new school building opened in 1960. The urban growth of the following decades transformed that initial community into a parish that today also serves Calamvale, Kuraby, Macgregor, Parkinson, Robertson, Runcorn, Stretton and Sunnybank Hills.

A community under the eyes of Lourdes

The parish celebrates the Mother of God with the title born of the 1858 apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in Massabielle. The spiritual bond does not turn Sunnybank into an apparition: it means that this community receives from Lourdes a school of prayer, penance, conversion, trust and service to the sick.

The patron's bulletin of February 2025 expressly recalls the eighteen apparitions, the invitation to pray the Rosary, the call to conversion, the spring, the request to build a chapel and the identification of Mary as the Immaculate Conception. The parish translates that memory into its own sacramental and community life.

The Rosary in parish life

The schedules published by the parish itself include Rosary and 9th on Saturdays, as well as Eucharist, reconciliation, worship, Christian meditation and different prayer groups. They are not isolated activities: they express the intention to accompany faith throughout the week and to keep the cult of Christ together with the concrete fraternity.

The present parish also recognizes Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders as traditional custodians of the land. This memory invites Marian devotion to live with respect, listening and gratitude to the human history of the place.
