Origin and history

El Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in Euclid (Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine) is located in Euclid, in the metropolitan area of Cleveland, Ohio, United States, and is entrusted to the Hermanas de la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret (Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth) according to the institutional presentation of the sanctuary itself.

Documented history: The sanctuary was born as an initiative of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, linked to the pastoral of the Catholic community of northeastern Ohio, which enabled a replica of the gruta de Lourdes to promote Marian devotion and prayer, especially for the sick, following the message of the 1858 apparitions in Lourdes (France). The Euclid grotto is explicitly inspired by the Gruta de Massabielle and in the classic image of Our Lady of Lourdes as described by Saint Bernardite Soubirous. It arises in a context of strong Catholic immigration in the Cleveland area, where popular parishes and devotions were multiplied. The sources consulted do not contain an exact date of foundation, although local tradition places its development in the 20th century as a place of regional pilgrimage.

Tradition / legend: Testimony of spiritual favors and thanks receivedespecially related to health and conversion, in continuity with the healing dimension of Lourdes. These stories are part of popular piety, but they do not appear as miracles officially recognized by a canonical organism similar to that of Lourdes (France); they are therefore considered local devotional tradition and are not recorded as facts certified by the Church at the universal level.

The image and the sanctuary

La main image of Our Lady of Lourdes in Euclid follows the classic iconographic model described by Saint Bernardita: a Young Virgin, dressed in white, with blue tape, a rosary on her arm and roses on her feet, typical representation spread around the world following the apparitions of 1858. No precise technical data on the material (wood, stone, resin or other) of the sculpture of Euclid; it is an image of round package placed inside the grotto, in a praying attitude, as in Lourdes.

The place of worship is usually called Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine and is configured as Marian crane to the librewith spaces for the celebration of the Eucharist, community prayer and personal recollection. The grotto reproduces, in an adapted way, the rocky environment of Massabielle, with the baking for the image of the Virgin, an area for candles and banks for the faithful. It is not known that the sanctuary has the title of minor basilica, ni de National sanctuary at the level of the Episcopal Conference of the United States; its character is mainly sanctuary of regional and diocesan devotion, frequented by faithful from the Diocese of Cleveland and North-East Ohio.

Other structures (chapel, retreat spaces, dependencies of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth) are also included in the complex, but the available sources above all highlight the grotto as a spiritual center and focal point of the pilgrimages.

Sponsorship and coronation

As regards patronazgoOur Lady of Lourdes of Euclid is a spiritual reference for the Catholic community of northeastern Ohio and a pilgrimage place within the diocese of Cleveland; however, no consta a formal decree declaring her as the principal patron of the city of Euclid, the diocese or the state of Ohio as a whole. His patronage is therefore of a character. devocional y local, in line with Lourdes' universal vocation, especially as the protection of sick and suffering.

On the canonical coronation of the image, in the accessible documentation of the sanctuary, of the diocese and in sources of reference there is no mention of a decree of coronation granted by the Holy See or by pontifical delegation. Therefore, according to the sources consulted, does not contain a documented canonical coronation for the image of Our Lady of Lourdes venerated in Euclid.

Party and devotion

La main party of the advocation of Our Lady of Lourdes in the universal Church is celebrated the 11 February, date of the first apparition to Saint Bernardite in 1858. The shrine of Euclid adheres to this date as Patron partyin communion with the whole Church.

The devotion in Euclid is expressed in pilgrimages, days of prayer and Marian celebrationsand in the months traditionally Marian (May and October). As in other sanctuaries of Lourdes, the spirituality that is encouraged is marked by the prayer for the sickthe reception of the sacraments (especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation) and confidence in the intercession of the Virgin.

Although no official influx figures are available, the sanctuary is described by diocesan and local sources as a important place of regional pilgrimagewho come to the faithful from various parishes in the Cleveland area for retreats, days of Marian prayer and devotional visits throughout the year. Among the popular traditions are the visit to the grotto, the burning of candles before the image and the presentation of intentions for the health of the body and the soul.

Link to the Rosary

La advocación de Our Lady of Lourdes is intimately linked to Rosary from its origin, for in the apparitions of 1858 the Virgin showed herself with a rosary on her arm and called Saint Bernardite to prayer and penance, in particular through the prayer of the Rosary. The iconography itself of Lourdes presents Mary with the rosary, underlining this praying dimension.

El Rosary is therefore a central practice also in the shrine of Euclid: although no specific times are specified in the sources consulted, the condition of the Grotto of Lourdes and the care of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth carry implied the promotion of the Community and staff prayer of the Rosaryin union with the Virgin and for the intentions of the Church, the sick and the families.

In this way, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes of Euclid is inserted into the great current of Marian spirituality of Lourdes spread throughout the world: a place where, in praying the RosaryThe faithful meditate on the mysteries of Christ in the hand of Mary, ask for the grace of conversion and place under the protection of the Virgin the needs of the local community and of all who suffer.
