Marian devotion
Our Lady of Lourdes de Yigo (Guam)
Place: 153 Chalan Pale' Ramon Lagu, Yigo, Guam
Marian party: February 11, memory of Our Lady of Lourdes.
At the northern end of Guam, the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes of Yigo is a specific Catholic presence, not a generic advocation attributed to the entire island. The Archdiocese of Agaña includes it in its official directory, with direction, ministers, sacramental hours and means of contact.
A chapel not to walk to Hagåtña
The local history of Yigo retains a simple and eloquent fact: in 1920 a chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes was erected so that the families of the area did not have to travel every week the long way to Hagåtña to participate in the Mass. The small local sanctuary was therefore born of a very concrete pastoral need: to bring the Eucharist closer to a scattered population.
In those early decades of the 20th century, Yigo was an agricultural community with houses separated by long distances. The temple was one of the places around which the people could gather. This circumstance helps to understand Marian devotion in its true context: Mary leads the community to Christ and favors the gathering of those who would otherwise have been far from the Sunday celebration.
The Advocation of Lourdes in Guam
The name of the parish links Yigo with the Grotto of Massabielle and with Saint Bernadette Soubirous. An apparition in Guam is not alleged to have occurred. The community receives the title of Lourdes as a memory of prayer, penance, conversion and care for the sick.
Guam's Catholic culture has historically expressed faith in their own community languages and forms. The current parish hours include a certain Sunday Mass in Chamorro and numerous celebrations in English. This linguistic coexistence shows a local Church that keeps its heritage and welcomes communities from different Pacific islands.
Rosary, reconciliation and Eucharist
The parish itself publishes the prayer of the Rosary and the possibility of confessing before the daily and Sunday Masses. It also maintains Eucharistic worship, catechetical formation and sacramental accompaniment. The Rosary thus appears in its most fruitful place: it prepares the heart to listen to the Gospel, receive the grace of the sacraments and serve others.
The declaration of parish mission expresses the desire to announce the Good News of Jesus Christ through word and action, to celebrate with reverence the Gospel and the sacraments, to be a source of hope for those in need and to participate in the redeeming work of Christ. The devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes is subordinated to this Christological center.
A story made of people
Guam public documents recall priests and laity who served for years in the parish. Father Gordon, cappuccino, was a parish priest between 1977 and 1985; other testimonies recognize catechists, mothers and servants who maintained the life of the community. The history of a temple does not belong only to its walls: it lives in those who prayed, taught faith, cared for children and accompanied the pain of their neighbours.

The chapel raised in 1920 recalls that the Church is approaching people. Those who contemplate this community from afar can join their deepest intention: that no one be deprived of the Word, the Eucharist and the company of their brothers because of their distance.
Prayer
Our Lady of Lourdes, Mother of the Church, protects the families of Yigo and all the peoples of Guam. Take us always to Jesus; strengthen the sick, comfort those who are alone and make us servants of hope. May the Rosary open our heart to the Gospel and may no distance separate us from Christ and his people. Amen.

The identification of the temple, its direction and its current life have been contrasted before publishing. The fact sheet distinguishes the facts of this community from the universal history of Lourdes.
