Origin and history

Documented history. Ludđmierz is considered the oldest Catholic parish in the Podhale region. The written history of the place dates back to the 13th century (1234 is mentioned as a reference date for the town and its historical environment), and is linked to the cult of Our Lady of Ludamierz, recognized today as Queen of Podhale. As the centuries passed, the parish church became a regional pilgrimage centre, especially for the gorale, who saw their Mother and protector in this Virgin.

In the 19th century and, above all, in the 20th century, the sanctuary was consolidated as important Marian centre in southern Polandwith a growing influx of pilgrims. The devotion received a strong impulse with the coronation of the image in 1963 and, later, with the visit of Saint John Paul II in 1997, who prayed the Rosary in the sanctuary and highlighted it as a Marian reference place for Podhale.

Tradition and legend. Local devotional sources often link the image's antiquity to a medieval era and surround it with pious accounts of mountain shrines (protection of pastors, help in danger, miracles linked to the Podhale region). However, the information notes consulted merely state that this is a "is medieval" without detailed specific verifiable legends, so that the specific narrations of miracles or prodigious origins remain within the local tradition and are not accurately recorded in the general sources of consultation.

The image and the sanctuary

The image. La venerada es una estatua gótica/medieval of the Virgin and the Child, known as Our Lady of Ludamierz. The sources in Spanish describe it as a imagen medieval located on a baroque altar, within the current neo-Gothic church. The material (wood / stone) and all the iconographic details are not accurately recorded in these sources, but the image corresponds to the type of Virgin with the Entonized Childthe medieval Marian sculpture of the region, and is recognized as the historical figure that has presided over the cult of the Mother of God in Ludđmierz for centuries.

The sanctuary. The current place of worship is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ludamierz, Queen of Podhale (in the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary), in Ludđmierz, near Nowy Targ, in the region of Little Poland. It's a temple of style. neogótico which houses in its interior a baroque altarin which the medieval statue of the Virgin is venerated.

The church of Ludđmierz has been elevated to the dignity of minor basilica and is officially recognized as Marian sanctuary of the Podhale region. The tourist and religious descriptions highlight that this temple is an important center of pilgrimages and the main Marian reference from the mountainous area south of Krakow.

Sponsorship and coronation

Patronage. Our Lady of Ludamierz is officially honored as “Reina de Podhale” (Królowa Podhala), that is, patron of the entire region of Podhale and its inhabitants, especially the Highlanders. The sanctuary is presented as the main Marian center of this area and the image is considered the patrona de Podhale.

Canon coronation. The sources consulted indicate that the image was on 18 August 1963. This coronation is mentioned in a prominent way as a key moment of the development of the sanctuary and of the spread of devotion.

The resources available in Spanish do not specifically specify in the form of a document the name of the Pontiff or the Cardinal / Delegate who performed the rite, although by the date it corresponds to the pontificate of St. John XXIII (died in June 1963) and the beginning of the pontificate of St. Paul VI (elected in June 1963). Since the sources consulted do not clearly specify the name of the pontifical delegate for coronation, is not certain, in these sources, the identity of the coronator.

– Año de coronación: 1963 (18 de agosto). – Pontífice/delegado: is not safe in the sources consultedand should therefore be indicated that no canonical coronation documented in detail (name of the delegate) in these sources.

Party and devotion

The main feast of Our Lady of Ludđmierz, Queen of Podhale, is held the September 8, coinciding with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. This day is considered the great Marian solemnity of the sanctuary, with a significant influx of faithful from all over the mountain region and from other parts of Poland.

The sanctuary is one of the most important pilgrimage places in Podhalewith the constant presence of groups of faithful, especially in summer and around the main Marian parties. Devotional features include:

St. John Paul II maintained a particularly close relationship with this sanctuary: as Pope, during his trip to Poland in 1997, he went to Ludamierz to pray the Rosary and referred to the Virgin of Ludamierz as patrona de Podhale, stressing the spiritual importance of the place.

Link to the Rosary

There is a explicit and significant link with the Rosary prayer. During his apostolic visit to Poland in 1997, John Paul II went to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Ludamierz precisely for the public prayer of the Rosary, which ended with a speech in which he invoked the Virgin of Ludzmierz as patron of Podhale. This celebration, presided over by the Pope, consolidated the image of the sanctuary as Marian prayer place, particularly rosarianfor the whole of southern Poland.

The local sources point out that the cult of Ludamierz is closely linked to St. John Paul II, who "came to Ludamierz to pray the rosary" during his visit to Poland, a gesture that has strengthened the practice of the Rosary among the pilgrims and devotees of the sanctuary.

Beyond this punctual fact, devotion to Our Lady of Ludamierz is placed within the framework of the rich Polish Marian Spiritualityin which the Rosary occupies a central place as a prayer of contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with Mary. In this sanctuary, the Rosary becomes a way to accompany the Virgin of Ludzmierz, Queen of Podhale, in her goings and pains, asking for her intercession.
