Origin and history

According to tradition, the place of Onions was marked from ancient times by a special presence of the Virgin Mary, and there is talk of Marian pilgrimages already in the Middle Ages to an image venerated as Virgin of the Snow, protector of the faithful of the southern region of Hungary (Baranya County). However, the legendary details of concrete apparitions or very old miracles are not accurately reflected in accessible sources and should be considered undocumented local tradition.

In the documented history, Máriagyő d is today one of the oldest Marian shrines in southern Hungary, linked to the diocese of Pécs and the nearby municipality of Alley (Baranya County). The Hungarian sources point out that the sanctuary developed as a place of Marian pilgrimage at least since the Middle Ages, consolidating itself over time as a centre of regional devotion to the Virgin under the title of Our Lady of Máriagyő d (en húngaro, Virgin Mary, Monthly Happiness).

During modern times, despite the historical vicissitudes of Hungary (Ottoman occupation, wars and political changes), Máriagyůd's Marian cult remained, and the sanctuary was rebuilt and embellished in different phases. In the 20th century the temple was recognized by the Church as minor basilica, confirming the historical and spiritual importance of the place; however, the exact date of this concession and the corresponding pontifical document are not recorded with certainty in the sources consulted, so that these data cannot be strictly specified.

The image and the sanctuary

The invocation focuses on a miraculous image of the Virgin, venerated as Virgin of the Snow, associated with Máriagyő d. In local tradition it is considered an image of the Mother of God who has accompanied the life of the sanctuary since ancient times, but easily accessible sources do not provide a complete technical description (precise iconographic type, material, author, dimensions). It is not certain whether it is a canvas, size or relief, or whether it represents a concrete scene (Madonna with the Child, Virgin in glory, etc.); it is only known that it is held by miraculous image and the object of prolonged pilgrimages in time.

The present sanctuary is the Mariagy, a Marian temple located next to Siklós, in Baranya County, in southern Hungary. It is recognized as Marian sanctuary y minor basilicaand is part of the oldest pilgrimage places in this region of the country. The ensemble is set up as a typical Central European sanctuary: church with a prominent façade, spaces for the reception of pilgrims and outside areas for mass celebrations. It depends ecclesiastically on the diócesis de Pécs. The available sources do not precisely detail the architectural style or the year of construction of the present church, so more specific data can not be provided without incurring conjectures.

Sponsorship and coronation

Our Lady of Máriagyő d is first and foremost patron of the santuary of Mariagy and the area of Siklós y Baranyawhere the influx of pilgrims shows a special arraigo of this advocation. At the ecclesial level, devotion is part of the Marian pastoral of the diócesis de Pécs. There are no formal decrees in the consulted sources that declare it an official patron of a diocese or of the entire Hungarian nation under this specific advocation, although veneration is significant in the south of the country.

As for the canonical coronationthe accessible sources do not contain clear reference to a pontifical coronation or an act of canonical coronation authorized by the Holy See for the image of Our Lady of Máriagyő d. Accordingly, according to the data consulted, does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

The invocation is related to the Virgin of the Snow, cuya memoria litúrgica universal es el 5 August; it is likely that this date will be relevant in the proper calendar of the sanctuary, but the sources consulted do not allow to confirm with certainty whether this is the main holiday in Máriagyůd, so it cannot be stated in a documented way. There is no detailed calendar of the feast of the sanctuary in easily accessible documents.

What it does know is that Máriagyůd is considered one of the Marian shrines of the oldest pilgrimage in southern Hungary, with pilgrims coming from different parts of the country, especially in the great Marian solemnities and during summer time. The pilgrimages have accompanied the life of the sanctuary since the Middle Ages and have continued even through the historical difficulties of contemporary Hungary. The popular traditions include the participation of families, parishes and organized groups, the celebration of the Eucharist and the reception of the sacraments, as well as acts of Marian consecration and prayers of request and gratitude for the image considered miraculous. There are no official flow figures or a detailed list of all devotional practices of the place.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted do not mention a specific and documented link between the advocation of Our Lady of Máriagyůd and a particular fellowship, feast or practice of Rosary (e.g. an official title linked to the Rosary, unique promises or specific Dominican foundations in the sanctuary). Therefore, it is not clear that this advocation has a particular historical relationship with the Rosary beyond common Marian devotion.

However, as in most of the great Marian shrines, the Rosary is a natural part of the spiritual life of Máriagyůd: the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ by the hand of Mary structure the piety of the pilgrims, accompanies the celebration of the Marian parties and supports the prayer of request and thanksgiving to the image of the Virgin of the Snow. Where the Church proposes a sanctuary as a place of encounter with the Mother of God, the prayer of the Rosary becomes a privileged way of uniting one's life to the mysteries of salvation, of interceding through the Church and the world, and of letting Mary lead to a more complete union with Christ.

Documentary update

The page of the diocese of Pecs confirms that Máriagyő d is one of the oldest pilgrimage places in Hungary and a living centre of Marian devotion. His historical account places the missionary activity of Archbishop Bruno de Querfurt at the end of the 10th century and mentions indulgences privileges granted to churches in the area in the 14th century. It also describes the continuity of the building during the Ottoman stage, when it was used first by the Serbian Orthodox community and then by the reformed Hungarian community.

The same diocesan source describes the rebirth of the sanctuary at the end of the 17th century, in relation to accounts of Marian apparitions, and the recovery of the temple for the Catholic Church thanks to the Franciscans of Siklós. According to this page, the place became a national pilgrimage centre during the first third of the 18th century, especially after the plague of 1737-1738. These data describe the history and memory of the sanctuary; they are not presented as a decree of supernatural approval of apparitions or cures.

The source also states that Pope Pius VII granted indulgences to the place in 1805 and 1846, that the bishop of Pécs János Szcytovszky declared it a place of pilgrimage and that in 2008 he received the title of minor basilica during the pontificate of Benedict XVI. The main image that is being venerated today is a size dated 1713, which replaced the previous one, moved to Osijek during the war of independence of Rákóczi. The 1900 organ, the work of József Biebert, is part of the artistic heritage described by the diocese.
