Origin and history

La localidad de Mariamabad ("City of Mary") is located in the Archdiocese of Lahore, in the province of Punyab, Pakistan, and was born at the end of the 19th century as a Catholic people marked from the beginning by a deep Marian devotion, especially promoted by Capuchin missionaries. This foundation soon made Mariamabad a reference centre for the Christians of the region, who came there in search of land, work and community life under the patronage of the Virgin Mary.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Marian national pilgrimage to Mariamabad, to become the Pakistan's main Marian shrine and in the largest annual concentration of Christians in the country, with the usual presence of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all the dioceses. Over time, the celebrations have also acquired an interreligious dimension, with significant participation of Muslims who come to pray and present their petitions to Mary.

TRADITION AND LAW: Some popular stories mention the "miraculous" character of the choice of the place or extraordinary favors obtained by the first settlers through the intercession of the Virgin; however, in the sources consulted there are no recognized apparitions or specific supernatural facts related to Lourdes in Mariamabad. HISTORIA DOCUMENTADA: What is firmly attested to is the development of the Marian village since 1898, its growing fame as a sanctuary, and the organization of the great annual pilgrimage of September, recognized by the local Church as the country's main Marian event.

The image and the sanctuary

In Mariamabad venerates the Virgin Mary in a Marian national sanctuary chaired by a gruta with the statue of the Virgin, inspired expressly by the Grotto of Massabielle of Our Lady of Lourdes. Fides Agency and other media describe the new projected grotto as a structure more than ten meters high, where the Marian image will be placed for the prayer of pilgrims. The iconography, according to the references, is inspired by Lourdes: Virgin standing, dressed in a clear and mantle robe, in a praying attitude, although the sources do not require material or technical details (the exact material of the image is not recorded).

The place is known as Mariamabad National Sanctuary (or National Sanctuary), located in the Archdiocese of Lahore. The chronicles present it in a stable way as the main National Marian Sanctuary Pakistan. In addition to the open-air grotto, the complex includes church, spaces for Eucharistic worship, confessions and the celebration of Mass, as well as extensive areas to host the many pilgrims. It is not recorded in the consulted sources that the main temple has been erected as minor basilicaor that there is a particular canon title beyond its status as a national or diocesan Marian sanctuary.

Sponsorship and coronation

The shrine of Mariamabad is repeatedly described as National Mariano Sanctuary of Pakistan, which implies a de facto recognition of its relevance to the Church of the country. It is located in the Archdiocese of Lahore, which is the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of reference. No formal declaration of specific national canonical patronage under the title of Our Lady of Lourdes of Mariamabad (beyond its role as a national sanctuary and the centrality of Marian devotion for Pakistani Catholics).

As for a canonical coronation of the image (according to the rules of the Holy See for Marian coronations), there is no documented mention of the date, or of the pontiff who authorized it, or of the pontifical delegate who made it. Therefore, according to the available data, does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

La great annual pilgrimage of Mariamabad is traditionally held in the month of September, and normally extends for three days, with Masses, processions, prayer of the Rosary, through the crucis, Eucharistic worship and acts of preaching. Many sources describe it as the Pakistan's largest Christian pilgrimagewith figures ranging from several hundred thousand to more than a million pilgrims each year.

The date of main party linked to this pilgrimage is usually around the celebration of Mary Most Holy in September; in some years it refers to the party of Name of Mary or to a "great national Marian feast," but in the sources consulted one does not need a liturgical advocation of its own with an exact date, so does not clearly contain a liturgical date of its own under the title of Lourdes de Mariamabad.

– La presencia significativa de musulmaneswho come to Mary as a mother and is also respected in Islam, making the sanctuary a place of encounter, prayer and interreligious dialogue.

The Romeria is also a time of great ecclesial cohesion for Pakistani Catholics, who find in Mariamabad a visible sign of hope and unity in a context of minority and sometimes social difficulties.

Link to the Rosary

In the sanctuary of Mariamabad the prayer of the Rosary has a central place in devotional life: during the great pilgrimage, the pilgrims pray the Rosary in processions, before the grotto and in community celebrations, as the chronicles of the pilgrimages and pastoral reports point out. The Marian character of the place and the inspiration of the grotto in Our Lady of Lourdes they strengthen the practice of the Rosary as a simple and profound expression of the faith of the people.

Although no specific formal association is documented under the title "Our Lady of the Rosary of Mariamabad," the spirituality of the sanctuary is spontaneously aligned with the prayer of the Rosary: meditation of the mysteries of Christ's life with Mary, pleading for the sick and needy, and the request for peace and coexistence between Christians and Muslims. In a context like Pakistan, where the Christian community is numerically small, the Rosary becomes a fireplace cotidiano de confiance in the intercession of the Virgin and a bond that unites pilgrims from all over the country to the Grotto of Mariamabad.
