Origin and history

On November 4, 1696, during the Holy Liturgy, the faithful saw tears sprout from the eyes of the Virgin of the icon. The phenomenon, which lasted until December, was investigated by ecclesiastical and civil authorities, whose protocols made it real. The Emperor Leopold I ordered to move the icon to Vienna, where it is venerated in the Cathedral of St. Stephen.

A copy was placed on the original site which, on August 1, 1715, also began to cry; a third tear occurred in 1905. Both were studied and recognized. The influx of pilgrims made Máriapercs the most famous Marian sanctuary in Hungary. In 2005 it was declared a national sanctuary and Hungary was entrusted to Our Lady of Tears.

The three tears (1696, 1715, 1905) with ecclesiastical processes, the transfer of the original to Vienna and the declaration of national sanctuary (2005) verified. Ponymic canonical coronation of the icon: not recorded.
