Origin and history

Marija Bistrica is one of the most important Marian centers in Croatia, with a venerated image of the Black Virgin who has been the focus of pilgrimage for centuries. The sanctuary was consolidated as a national reference, a place of prayer and Catholic identity of the Croatian people.

His contemporary relief was reinforced when Saint John Paul II beatified, in 1998, Cardinal Aconzije Stepinac, Archbishop of Zagreb and emblematic figure of the 20th century Croatian Church. That celebration confirmed Marija Bistrica as the spiritual heart of the nation.

Documentary update

The shrine of Marija Bistrica retains a black size of wood from the 15th century, the work of a local author unknown according to the official history of the sanctuary. The fountain places the first veneration in a chapel of Vinski Vrh between 1499 and 1545. In the face of the Ottoman danger, the parish priest moved the image to Bistrica in 1545 and hid it under the chorus of the parish church. The history of the sanctuary tells that a light led to the finding of 1588; it is presented as a tradition of the place, not as an independent historical conclusion.

The same source documents a second finding on July 15, 1684 and the subsequent growth of the pilgrimages. It also contains the account of a healing that occurred the following day, but the fact sheet keeps that episode as a witness to the devotional history transmitted by the sanctuary, not as a miracle whose formal approval is affirmed here. The Croatian Parliament promoted an altar and access works in 1710 and 1711; the road for pilgrims was built in 1721 and repaired in 1753.

The solemn coronation of the image took place on 7 July 1935, with the authorization of the Chapter of the Basilica of St. Peter, according to the source of the sanctuary. In that celebration Archbishop Antun Bauer proclaimed the Virgin Mother of God of Bistrica as Queen of the Croats. The canonical coronation and the national rank of the sanctuary describe the Catholic cult; they do not in themselves amount to an approval of apparitions or cures.
