Main data
Origin and history
The great Marian church of Prčanj is known today as Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (in Croatian / serbocroata, dedicated to the Nativity of the Gospa, the Virgin Mary), located in the town of Prčanjin the municipality of Kotor, on the banks of the bay of the same name, in Montenegro. It is a Catholic temple of Latin rite, built as a great church of the sailors of the area of Boka Kotorska, which explains its monumental and clear link to the sea.
In the tourist and historical documentation available online the name of the temple is clearly noted as "Church of Our Lady's Nativity" ("Nativity of the Virgin / Birth of Our Lady Church") in Prčanj, without the official use of the specific title appearing clearly in verifiable sources "Our Lady of Graces (Gospa od Milosti)" for this particular image or temple. In Kotor Bay there are several Marian churches and sanctuaries with similar titles - Our Lady of the Rockson an islet in front of Perast- which forces to extreme prudence so as not to confuse claims or locations. In the sources consulted, no precise chronological data (year of beginning and end of work, date of consecration, documented founder) on the construction of the church of Prčanj have been found, nor a detailed historical narrative of the establishment of the advocation "Our Lady of Graces" in this place; therefore, no constan with certainty such data.
From the point of view of tradition and popular piety, throughout the Bay of Kotor the Virgin Mary is venerated of ancient protection of seafarers and the families associated with shipping and maritime trade. This marine Marian tradition is very strong in Boka Kotorska and is reflected in both Prčanj and other nearby villages; however, the concrete accounts of graces received or miracles associated with the local advocation in Prčanj no constan in accessible documented sources, or appear in a generic way in tourist descriptions with no critical historical value. Therefore, information on possible foundational legends or apparitions specifically linked to "Our Lady of Graces (Gospa od Milosti)" in the temple of Prčanj is not strictly documented and should be considered as no constatada.
The image and the sanctuary
The available sources agree that the great Catholic church of Prčanj is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin (Birth of Our Lady)and that it is a building of great proportions, visible from the bay by its imposing façade and by the wide staircase that ascends from the coastal area to the temple. It is described as a monumental, classicist / late baroque construction, with great escalinata frontal, wide facade with portico and fronton, raised on a podium that dominates the house of Prčanj and the landscape of the Bay of Kotor.
In the photographic and tourist documentation it is simply mentioned as “Our Lady’s Temple of Prčanj” o “Birth of Our Lady Church / Church of the Nativity of the Virgin”, destacando su carácter de gran iglesia parroquial mariana of the town, but no consta having the title of a minor basilica, or having been proclaimed a national or diocesan sanctuary in easily accessible documents. It is presented, yes, as one of the religious and artistic milestones of Kotor Bay, very frequented by visitors and pilgrims, although much of the information comes from tourist sources and not from official ecclesial documents.
As for the imagen marian concrete venerated inside, the open sources consulted (including the press, travel agency materials and photo repertories) do not provide a clear description of either the type of image (sculpture, icon or painting), its material, or its specific iconography under the title of "Our Lady of Graces (Gospa od Milosti)" in this church. For example, no diocesan catalogues, official pages of the sanctuary or studies of sacred art have been found with a detailed description of Prčanj's headline image. Therefore, no consta documentedly:
– Si la imagen principal es un pictorial altarpiece, un icono oriental o una round lump sculpture. – Si aparece con Niño, en actitud de bendecir, de intercesión o con símbolos marineros (anclas, barcos, exvotos). – La datación precisa y el autor de la obra.
What can be said with caution, in the light of the tradition of Kotor Bay and other nearby Marian shrines, is that venerated Marian iconography usually presents the Virgin as intercesor and protectivein special relation to the sea and the life of the navigators; however, the concrete form that this iconography takes in the image of Prčanj is not documented in a verifiable manner in the sources used.
Sponsorship and coronation
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin is the main Catholic Church of Prčanj, a town belonging to the municipality of Kotor, and in fact fulfils the role of great Marian temple of the local marine community and families linked to the sea. In this sense, although the documentation does not explain a formal decree of patronage, the Virgin venerated in Prčanj can be considered, in pastoral practice, patron of the people of Prčanj and their sailors, in continuity with the Marian tradition of the whole Kotor Bay.
No reliable reference to canonical recognition of patronage at the level has been found in the sources consulted diocesan o National under the specific title "Our Lady of Graces (Gospa od Milosti)" linked to the temple of Prčanj; therefore, no consta an official patronage beyond the local level.
As for the canonical coronation of the image, the verified sources (guides, short historical descriptions, tourist pages and religious outreach notes related to the area) no mencionan no act of canonical coronation of the Virgin of Prčanj, either by the command of a particular pontiff or by a pontifical delegate. Therefore, for this advocation in this place, it must be stated:
"there is no documented canonical coronation."
Party and devotion
The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, so the ordinary liturgical logic makes you think that the temple's main feast is the September 8, liturgical memory of the Nativity of Mary in the Roman calendar. However, the sources consulted do not explicitly indicate the specific date of the patron party of Prčanj, nor do they describe in detail the local liturgical celebrations (processions, novenas, night vigil, blessing of the sea, etc.), so this identification of dates must be handled with caution and cannot be presented as a safe documentary data.
Various tourist and descriptive testimonies agree to present the temple of Prčanj as a place of great attraction for faithful and visitorswhich are both brought closer by the beauty of the building and by its religious and Marian meaning. It is indicated, for example, that the temple is normally closed and opens at reduced times for veneration and visits, suggesting a living but not massive community, with a reinforced influx on Sundays and holidays. However, there are no figures of pilgrims or of participation in specific parties, nor are there any description of distinctive popular traditions (maritime romaneries, processions through the bay, promises of sailors) that can be attributed with certainty to the advocation of "Our S
