Our Lady of Montenero
Mater Etruriae, patron of Tuscany · Livorno (Italy)
On the hill of Montenero, over Livorno and with views of the sea, it venerates Madonna delle Grazie, patron of all Tuscany with the title of Mater Etruriae.
Origin and history
The tradition places the origin of the sanctuary on May 15, 1345, when a poor lame shepherd would have found an image of the Virgin and took her to the top of the mountain, until then kept from bandits and called "mountain of the devil." The historical criticism attributes the image to the painter Iacopo di Michele, called Gera, about 1341.
The cult was consolidated in the 14th century and spread throughout Tuscany. The sanctuary was entrusted to the Walloon monks in 1792 and raised to lower basilica by Pius VII in 1818. In 1947 Pius XII proclaimed Madonna di Montenero patron of Tuscany with the title of Mater Etruriae. It retains a very rich collection of exvotes.
