Origin and history

According to the historical tradition collected from local sources and historiography, the Monastery of Morača was founded in 1252 by the Serbian Prince Esteban (Stefan) de Nemanjić, grandson of Esteban Nemanja and member of the royal house of the Nemanjić. The foundation is located in the context of the medieval Serbian kingdom, when numerous monasteries dedicated to the Mother of God multiplied as centres of liturgical, cultural and political life.

As for the documented historyIt is known that the monastery has for centuries been an important religious, cultural and political centre in the central region of Montenegro. Throughout the Ottoman period, it suffered partial looting and destruction; it was rebuilt in the 16th century, when some of its frescoes were added or renewed. In modern times it is recognized as one of the most famous and visited monasteries in the country, located in the canyon of the Morača River, about 50 km from the capital Podgorica, within the present municipality of Kolašin.

There are no widely documented particular legends about specific Marian apparitions in Morača; the advocation is mainly linked to the liturgical dedication from the temple to the Mother of God and its permanent veneration in the Serbian and Montenegrin Orthodox tradition.

The image and the sanctuary

En Morača se veneran diversas representations of the Mother of God according to Byzantine-Slavic iconography. In the monastery area, for example, a icon-mosaic of Mary, Mother of God, with the Child Jesus Christ, placed in the area of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Morača. The local Marian iconography follows the canons of the Theotokos (Bogorodica, "Mother of God"), with the Child in his arms, as is common in the Eastern tradition; the material indicated in contemporary visual sources includes mosaic and painted icons, while medieval frescoes are made to fresco on wall.

The main sanctuary is the Monasterio de Morača (Манастир Морача), Serbian Orthodox monastery located in the central part of Montenegro. The monastic complex includes:

– La iglesia principal, denominada habitualmente Cathedral or Church of the Assumption / Sleeping of the Mother of God (Assumption of the Mother of God), que constituye el núcleo del conjunto y está decorada con famosos frescos medievales. – Una segunda iglesia dedicada a San Nicolás, also within the monastic enclosure.

The monastery rises in a very picturesque place, in the canyon of the Morača Riverby the right bank of the river. The architecture responds to the style of the medieval Serbian monasteries, with stone church, dome and a courtyard closed by monastic dependencies. It does not know that the temple has the title of minor basilica It is officially established as Nacional or diocesan sanctuary in the Catholic canonical sense; it is rather presented as one of the most important Orthodox monasteries in Montenegro.

Sponsorship and coronation

La advocación de la Mother of God of Morača (Presveta Bogorodica) has a character of patronage essentially monastic and regional: the monastery is described as one of the main spiritual centers of the central region of Montenegro and is part of the religious and historical identity of the Morača canyon area and the municipality of Kolašin. In accessible sources, there is no formal proclamation as a patron of a specific city, diocese or of the Montenegrin nation in legal-canonical (Catholic) key; its influence, however, is significant in the Montenegrin Orthodox tradition.

On the canonical coronation of the image, as it is a sanctuary of the Serbian Orthodox Church and not of the Catholic Church, the rite of pontifical canonical coronation as understood in Latin canon law does not correspond. In the documentation consulted does not contain a documented canonical coronation by pontifical authority or by delegates of the Holy See.

Party and devotion

The main church of the monastery is dedicated to the Sleeping (or Assumption) of the Mother of Godone of the great Marian parties of the Byzantine calendar, held the August 15 According to the Julian or Gregorian calendar, according to the concrete liturgical practice of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Although the sources consulted do not expressly indicate the date of the feast of the monastery itself, it is reasonable to associate its main solemnity with this great Marian feast, given the title of the church; however, is not explicitly dated as a party of its own in the revised sources.

The Monastery of Morača is described as one of Montenegro's most famous and visited, attracting pilgrims and visitors both for their spiritual importance and for their artistic and landscape value. It is recognized as "one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in Montenegro," located in a natural environment of great beauty, which promotes a constant influx of faithful and tourists. The devotion is expressed above all in the participation in the Orthodox liturgythe veneration of the Marian icons and frescoes, and in the visit to the monastery as a place of prayer, silence and contact with the Eastern Christian tradition.

Tourist and cultural sources highlight the pilgrimages and visits organized to the monastery as the usual stage of the itineraries in the interior of Montenegro, although there are no specific figures of influx or detailed popular rituals (processions, specific vigil, etc.). The revised documentation does not contain a specific popular feast different from the great celebrations of the Orthodox calendar, in particular the Sleeping of the Mother of God.

Link to the Rosary

In the tradition of Orthodox Church, Marian devotion is articulated in a different way to the Latin Catholic and has no Rosary as central practice, but other forms of prayer, such as the singing of the liturgical hymns (for example, the Akáthistos to the Theotokos) and the veneration of the icons. In the sources consulted on the monastery of Morača there is no specific or historical relationship between the advocation of the Mother of God of Morača and the prayer of the Rosary in its Latin form.

From a broader Marian perspective, the Rosary can spiritually accompany devotion to the Mother of God of Morača in the key of communion between East and West: the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ in the Rosary coincides with the veneration of Mary as TheotokosMother of God, present in the liturgy and in the iconography of the monastery. For the Catholic faithful, the prayer of the Rosary to this advocation can be a way of joining the love and honor that the Churches of Orthodox tradition profess to the Mother of God, begging for the unity of Christians and contemplating, together with Morača, the mystery of the Sleep / Assumption of the Virginwhich the temple celebrates as its great title and main feast.
