Main data
Origin and history
In Mugera, in the archdiocese of Gitega, is the Burundi National Marian Sanctuary, one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the country and Central Africa. The place is particularly linked to the consecration of Burundi to the Virgin Mary, carried out by the civil and religious authorities shortly before the independence of the country.
Documented history. The Marian shrine of Mugera was on 15 August 1961the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, with the presence of the authorities of the country - including Prince Louis Rwagasore, a key figure of Burundian independence - as an audiovisual report and the chronicles of the fiftieth anniversary of the sanctuary recalls. In 2011, the Gold Jubilee of the sanctuary and the consecration of Burundi to the Virgin, with a great national pilgrimage and the renewal of the act of giving the country to Mary, convened by the Episcopal Conference. The sanctuary has been consolidated as Marian National Shrine of Mugera, under the responsibility of the Archdiocese of Gitega, and is the usual goal of mass pilgrimages, both popular and official.
Tradition / legend. The sources consulted (Vatican News, Fides Agency, Catholic Press) highlight Mugera's national, Marian and penitential meaning, but do not collect a story of apparitions or a concrete foundational legend (e.g. visions, miraculous finding of an image or extraordinary interventions). Therefore, there is no specific legendary tradition similar to other calls for apparition; Mugera's importance is based mainly on the country's consecration to Mary and the recent history of the Catholic Church in Burundi.
The image and the sanctuary
The sources identify Mugera as National Marian shrine where the Burundian people especially pray to the Virgin under the title of Our Lady of Lourdes. Vatican News and other media describe the sanctuary as a place where the faithful come to ask for the intercession of the Virgin by evoking Our Lady of Lourdes, thus linking local devotion to the Marian universal icon of Lourdes. No precise details on the image type (size, procedural statue, material, author or date), nor an iconographic description beyond that reference to the Virgin of Lourdes; therefore, it must be strictly indicated that does not contain a documented and detailed description of the image.
As for the building, the sanctuary is organized around the parish of San Antonio de Padua de Mugerawhich is located within the territory of the national Marian sanctuary. The parish temple was to the dignity of the minor basilica in the Solemnity of the Assumption, in a celebration presided over by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, according to Vatican News. In this way, the heart of the sanctuary is today the Minor Basilica of San Antonio de Padua, in the Marian National Shrine of Mugerain the archdiocese of Gitega. The chronicles present it as a great temple of pilgrimage, without the specific dimensions, architectural style or specific artistic elements being detailed in the sources consulted.
Sponsorship and coronation
The Mugera shrine is recognized by the Church in Burundi as National Mariano Sanctuary, that is, a reference place for the whole country, beyond the archdiocese of Gitega where it is located. In addition, it is particularly associated with spiritual patronage over the nationwhile there the consecration of Burundi to the Virgin Mary was realized and renewed. It is not clear that Our Lady of Mugera is officially proclaimed patron of a specific city other than the national level; the emphasis of the sources is on its character as a National sanctuary.
In relation to a possible canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Mugera (or Our Lady of Lourdes venerated in Mugera), the sources consulted - including chronicles of anniversaries, visits of high-ranking Church officials and heads of State, as well as notes of Catholic agencies - do not mention any canonical coronation. Given the solemn nature of such acts, usually collected by the agencies and the ecclesial press, it can be strictly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
La main party in Mugera is linked to the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, August 15the date on which the sanctuary was consecrated in 1961 and the usual day of great national pilgrimages. On that day, as well as on its eve, tens of thousands of faithful from all over the country, including those responsible for civil and ecclesial life, come to Mugera. The chronicles of the jubilee and recent visits of Cardinal Parolin mention a influx of thousands of pilgrimsto pray for peace, reconciliation and the future of Burundi, especially in contexts of social and political tension.
La Marian devotion in Mugera is characterized by:
– National Pilgrims en torno al 15 de agosto, con participación de obispos, sacerdotes, religiosos y gran número de laicos. – Acts of consecration and renewal de la entrega de Burundi a la Virgen María, signo de confianza en su protección maternal sobre la nación. – Prayer for peace and reconciliationvery much highlighted in the messages of the bishops and the Pontifical Envoy, who present the sanctuary as a place where Mary is asked to accompany the path of forgiveness and well-being for all.
The sources mention that also political leaders, including the President of the Republic, have participated in the pilgrimages and celebrations in Mugera, showing the national symbolic weight of the sanctuary.
Link to the Rosary
The information available does not describe a specific and own link of this advocation with the prayer of Rosary (for example, the Rosary's cofradies expressly linked to the sanctuary, particular indulgences or unique practices related to this devotion). However, since it is a mold sanctuaryand also linked to the universal vocation of Lourdes, it is reasonable to state - in line with the general praxis of the Church - that the Rosary is one of the usual forms of Marian prayer lived by pilgrims, along with participation in the Eucharist, processions and acts of consecration.
In Marian spirituality, the Rosary is presented as a "school of contemplation" of the life of Christ with the eyes of Maryand as a prayer of intercession for the Church and for the peoples. Applied to Mugera, although sources do not detail concrete forms, the Rosary is understood as a to beg for the peace, reconciliation and protection of the Virgin over Burundiin continuity with the consecration of the country to Mary and with the penitential and hopeful tonality of the great pilgrimages to the sanctuary.
