Origin and history

The shrine of Our Lady of Namyang, Mother of the Martyrs It is located in Namyang, in the city of Hwaseong (Gyeonggi province), south of Seoul, in an area closely linked to the memory of the Korean martyrs of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Marian devotion of the place is born together with the fidelity of the Catholics persecuted in those years, who gathered in rural areas to live the faith, and the subsequent decision of the Korean Church to memorize there the testimony of the lay martyrs and priests.

From the perspective of documented historyThe sanctuary was developed in the 20th century as an important national pilgrimage centre, promoted by the Church in Korea as "Our Lady of the Namyang Martyrs Sanctuary" (Namyang Mary Shrine / Shrine of Our Lady of the Martyrs in Namyang). It is officially recognized as the Marian sanctuary and place of memory of the martyrs, and is organized pastoral by the competent diocese (archdiocese of Seoul and, at present, the diocese of Suwon, according to the ecclesiastical reorganization of the area).

There is no official source tradition of apparitions or extraordinary interventions of the Virgin in Namyang similar to other Marian shrines; the spirituality of the place focuses rather on the contemplation of Mary associated with the sacrifice of the Korean martyrs and on prayer in a wide space of retreat, which integrates historical memory, catechesis and Marian devotion. When it comes to "Mother of the Martyrs" it is a devotional title linked to the Korean context, not a specific documented apparition.

As regards elements of tradition or devotional accents not strictly documented, the popular piety presents Mary in Namyang as Mother who accompanies the suffering of her persecuted children, and many pilgrims interpret the place as "land sanctified" by the blood of the martyrs, where the Virgin welcomes and comforts the Korean Church; these accents belong to the language of faith and not to a verifiable historical account.

The image and the sanctuary

In the Shrine of Namyang they veneration various Marian imagesespecially an image of the Virgin who presides over the explanade and the spaces of prayer, under the title of Our Lady of the Martyrs. This is a modern, simple-style image of Korean contemporary sacred art, in a praying and maternal attitude; the sources consulted do not safely specify the material (it does not show whether it is stone, bronze or other), so it should be indicated: is not certain the material of the main image. In photographs and descriptions, one can see an iconography that highlights Mary as Mother who welcomes martyrs and pilgrims, rather than elaborate symbolic elements.

The set is officially named in English from “Namyang Catholic Martyrs’ Shrine” o “Namyang Mary Shrine, Our Lady of the Martyrs”. The sanctuary is made up of a wide outdoor area, ways of meditation, chapels, commemorative spaces of martyrs and a church for the celebration of the Eucharist, all of which are prepared to host great pilgrimages. It is recognized as Marian and martyrdom sanctuary at national level and one of the main pilgrimage centres of South Korea, although it is not clear that the main church has been elevated to the title of a minor basilica by the Holy See. There is also no specific designation as a "national sanctuary" in a pontifical document; its national character is derived from the pastoral use and recognition of the Korean Church.

Sponsorship and coronation

La advocación de Our Lady of Namyang, Mother of the Martyrsis closely linked to spiritual patronage of the Korean martyrs and pilgrims who come to this place. There is no pontifical decree that the patron name of a specific diocese under this specific title; rather, it is venerated as the Mother of the Church in Korea and protector of those who are inspired by the example of the martyrs.

On the canonical coronation, in the available documentation of the sanctuary and in the ecclesial and Marian sources of dissemination consulted, there is no reference to an official canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Namyang. Therefore, according to the above rule, it should be stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

It does not contain a "patronal feast" of its own, other than these celebrations, with an officially fixed date for the whole Church or even for the diocese; it is rather a place that is attended throughout the year, with peaks of influx in the feasts of the martyrs and of the Virgin.

The Namyang shrine is described in various sources as one of the main pilgrimage centres of the Korean Churchwho receive a large number of faithful, parish groups, communities and lay movements, both for retreats and for one-day pilgrimages. There are no recent official figures of inflow in the documents consulted, and it should therefore be indicated that in the precise numerical data of pilgrims. Devotion is expressed in participation in the Eucharist, Eucharistic worship, personal prayer, the prayer of various Marian devotions and the journey through the memorials of the martyrs, which invites conversion and fidelity in faith.

Link to the Rosary

The descriptions of the Namyang shrine indicate that it is a markedly Marian place, with wide spaces of prayer and meditation; in this context, the prayer of the Rosary is very present in the devotional practice of the pilgrims, especially as a way of contemplating the life of Christ united with the witness of the martyrs who followed the Lord until the shed of his blood. However, it is not found in the sources consulted that there is a official and explicit association of the advocation with the Rosary (for example, a title such as "Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Namyang" or a statutory obligation to pray for it), so it should be specified: does not contain a specific legal link or holder with the Rosary.

From a general Marian perspective, the Rosary It is understood in Namyang as a school of fidelity and perseverance: by meditating on the joyful, luminous, painful and glorious mysteries, the believer joins Mary in the way of Christ and is illuminated by the witness of the martyrs who lived in depth those same mysteries. The confident repetition of the "Hail Mary" helps to internalize the communion of the saints, in which Mary, Mother of the Martyrs, appears as a model of strength at the foot of the Cross and of hope in the resurrection, spiritual support of the Korean Church who pilgrims and prays in Namyang.
