Our Lady of Neamț

Advocate Mariana de Monastery Neamț (Moldavia)

The tradition of the Neamț monastery states that the ancient icon of Nuestra Señora de Neamt (Mother of God from Neamt) was a gift from the Byzantine Emperor Juan VIII Paleólogo to the monastery in the 15th century, and that from very soon was considered an icon microroso, protector of the monastic community and the region of Moldova. According to this tradition, the icon would have arrived in the context of the political and religious alliances between Byzancio and the Romanian principals shortly before the fall of Constantinople.

Origin and history

The tradition of the Neamț monastery states that the ancient icon of Nuestra Señora de Neamt (Mother of God from Neamt) was a gift from the Byzantine Emperor Juan VIII Paleólogo to the monastery in the 15th century, and that from very soon was considered an icon microroso, protector of the monastic community and the region of Moldova. According to this tradition, the icon would have arrived in the context of the political and religious alliances between Byzancio and the Romanian principals shortly before the fall of Constantinople.

From the point of view of the documented history, the Monasterio de Neamț (Neamț Monastery) is one of the oldest and most relevant monastic centers in Moldova, with a documented presence at least since the 14th century, and an important development under voivoda Esteban el Grande (Ştefan cel Mare, 15th century). The presence in the monastery of an ancient Byzantine icon of the Mother of God is attested to in historical and artistic sources, which point to its eastern origin and its antiquity, although the concrete attribution to the Emperor John VIII Paleologist belongs to the realm of tradition, not of strict documentation. In Romanian Orthodox spirituality, this image of the Mother of God of Neamț has been considered one of the most venerated Marian icons of Moldova.

(When you talk about John VIII Paleologist as a donor you have to understand it as a traditional-legendary element; there is no original donation document that confirms it.)

The image and the sanctuary

El icono de Our Lady of Neamț es un Byzantine icon of the Mother of God, of a traditional oriental type (Theotokos), painted on a table and following the technique of Byzantine iconographers. The sources indicate that it is an ancient icon of late Byzantine style, venerated as microroso, and preserved in the monastery as one of its most important spiritual treasures. The specific iconographic details (for example, in the case of the Hodegetria type, Eleousa, etc.) vary according to the studies, and there is no uniform and clearly documented description in the sources consulted; therefore, the iconographic subtype cannot be strictly specified.

The icon is venerated in the Monasterio de Neamț (Neamț Monastery)in the historic region of Moldovain current Romania. It is a great Orthodox monastery, spiritual and intellectual center of the Romanian Orthodox Church, with important cultural activity (scriptorium, school, library) especially in the Middle Ages. The monastic set includes a main church of Moldovan style, monastic dependencies and other historical buildings; it is considered one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Romania. From the canonical and honorary point of view, in the sources consulted it is not known that the church of the monastery has the title of minor basilica (title of the Latin rite) nor that the place be officially recognized as "national sanctuary" in Catholic key; it is, above all, a Grand Orthodox Monastery with a strong character as a pilgrimage sanctuary for the faithful of the region.

Sponsorship and coronation

The sources consulted do not contain a Official patronage of this advocation over a city, diocese or nation in the Catholic canon sense of the term. In the Romanian Orthodox context, the Mother of God venerated in the icon of Neamț is especially considered protective of Monastery of Neamț and the faithful of Moldova, but it is not defined by a title of national or diocesan patron in official documents accessible.

As for a canonical coronation in the way of the Latin Catholic Church (with the decree of the Holy See and the rite of coronation), does not contain a documented canonical coronation. The veneration of the icon is part of the tradition of the Romanian Orthodox Church, where the honor given to miraculous icons is not usually expressed by canonical coronations issued by the Holy See, but by other liturgical and cultual signs of the Eastern tradition.

Party and devotion

The available sources highlight the great devoción popular to the icon of the Mother of God of Neamț in the framework of the liturgical life of the monastery and the Marian parties of the Orthodox calendar, but does not clearly and unanimously contain a specific, unique and universally recognized date as an exclusive "own feast" of this advocation other than the great common Marian solemnities (Sleep / Assumption, Nativity of the Mother of God, Protection of the Mother of God, etc.).

It is clear, however, that the Monastery of Neamț is a place of pilgrimage of many faithful, especially in the great feasts of the Mother of God and in the main monastic celebrations, when the pilgrims come to venerate the icon, ask for intercession and thank you for the favors received. They are part of devotion the processions with the icon At certain parties, veneration through kisses, candles and prayers, and reading of prayers of the Mother of God, deeply rooted in Romanian Orthodox tradition. There are no precise and verifiable data of inflow (number of pilgrims) in the sources consulted.

In popular piety, the Mother of God of the Gentile is taken as powerful intercessor, and the icon is attributed to various spiritual and material favors over the centuries, which is why it is often described as "miraculous" icon in local tradition. This assessment belongs to the field of devotion and pious testimonies.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted do not contain a specific and documented relationship between the advocation of Our Lady of Neamț and the prayer of Rosary in its Latin form (mysteries and accounts as known in the western Catholic tradition). It is an advocation belonging to the context of Rumana Orthodox Iglesiawhere the main Marian prayer is not the Dominican rosary, but the pleas of the Byzantine tradition (akáthistos, paraklesis, hymns and prayers to the Theotokos).

However, from a general Marian perspective, the RosaryIn Catholic spirituality, it is contemplative to unite the mysteries of Christ with Mary and allows us to enter, by faith, into the same reality that the Eastern icons express visually. The contemplation of the icon of the Mother of God of Neamț It can be harmonized, for a faithful Catholic, with the prayer of the Rosary: the evangelical scenes meditated on the mysteries find a silent echo in the image of the Theotokos that presents the Son and leads to Him. So, though there is no historical or liturgical link between this advocation and the Rosary, the prayer of the Rosary can become a deeply Catholic way of accompanying the veneration of this ancient Marian icon, joining the faith of generations of Eastern Christians who have looked into it the face of the Mother of God.
