Origin and history

According to the tradition collected by the Archdiocese of Ljubljana, the Marian devotion of Nova Štifta dates back to an ancient cult on a hill that was initially called Brinov grič (Juniper hill), where the people gathered to honor the Virgin. This place of popular prayer, around a first image of Mary, would have given rise over time to the sanctuary and to the consolidation of the rosemary. This is a story from the izročilo (oral transmission), without detailed documentary confirmation.

As for the documented historythe sources point out that the present Baroque sanctuary rose between 1641 y 1671at the initiative of the lord of the castle of Ribnica, who commissioned the construction of the church of pilgrimage dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. The church is located in the village of Nova Štifta, municipality of Sodražica, not far from the city of Ribnica, in the region of Baja Carniola (Dolenjska). The Archdiocese of Ljubljana confirms that for more than 350 years the "pilgrimage route to Mary Asunta in Nova Štifta" has gathered faithful from the region and other parts of Slovenia.

In time, next to the church, a Franciscan monasteries, currently attended by the Minor Brothers (OFM), who guard the sanctuary and accompany the liturgical and devotional life. The Christian-convent ensemble thus became one of the most prominent historical Marian centers in the Ribnica area.

The image and the sanctuary

The headline image is Mary in the mystery of her Assumption (Maria Vnebovzet), venerada en el Barroco major altar of the church. The available sources describe a typically baroque interior with richly decorated altarpieces, without accurately detailing the material of the main image; therefore, no consta with certainty whether it is wood size, polychrome sculpture or other technique. Iconographically, the Virgin is presented as Asunta, in line with the dedication of the temple; there are no unique iconographic features beyond the classic scheme of the Asunción.

The sanctuary is the Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja (Church of the Assumption of Mary), a Catholic church of pilgrimage located on an isolated hill, surrounded by centenary tilos that are part of the landscape and devotional character of the place. The church is a unique central-floor Baroque temple, described as one of the most original churches in Slovenia for its "eccentric" structure and octagonal plant. In its immediate surroundings is a small Franciscan monastery, which strengthens the character of a sanctuary.

The temple is recognized as Roman Cerkev (pilgrimage church) in local ecclesial documentation, but no consta who has the title of a minor basilica or who is formally erected as a national sanctuary; rather, he presents himself as one of the main sanctuaries of Marian pilgrimage within the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.

Sponsorship and coronation

The church and monastery are located in the town of Nova Štifta, municipality of Sodražica, belonging to the Archdiocese of Ljubljana. The Archdiocese itself includes it among its "main sanctuaries of pilgrimage," which indicates a patronazgo regional significant in the area of Ribnica and Baja Carniola. There is no explicit mention of an official canonical patronage (e.g. as a patron of the diocese or of the Slovenian nation), so no consta No such recognition.

In the documentation consulted (sites of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana, of the Franciscans, tourist and cultural descriptions, and general repertories), does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Nova Štifta. There are no references to a pontifical decree, specific date or delegate name for a solemn canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

La main party of the sanctuary is celebrated August 15, solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Franciscans of Nova Štifta point to an intense liturgical program: the evening of August 14 and the solemn Eucharist and several masses on the 15th (for example, at 6: 00, 8: 00, 10: 00, 12: 00 and 16: 00), an indication of a remarkable influx of pilgrims. The Archdiocese stresses that the "pilgrimage route to Mary Asunta in Nova Štifta" has been gathering faithful for about 350 years, consolidating the sanctuary as a traditional place of Romance.

Cultural and tourist sources describe Nova Štifta as one of the most frequent Marian shrines in Sloveniaespecially around the feast of the Assumption. The pilgrims walk along the trails that ascend to the hill, marked by the centenary tiles, and participate in the liturgical and sacramental celebrations of a sanctuary: Mass, confessions, Marian prayers and processions. No exact numbers of participants or very specific popular traditions (such as particular offerings or unique rituals) are detailed, so no consta precisely that type of data, beyond the general reference to the great concurrence and the historical pilgrimage character of the place.

Link to the Rosary

In the official and historical sources consulted (Archdiocese of Ljubljana, Franciscan community, descriptions of the sanctuary), no consta a specific and explicit relationship of Our Lady of Nova Štifta's advocation with a Rosary fellowship or other specific rosarian institutions. Nor is there any mention of a feast of the Rosary, especially linked to this sanctuary.

However, in the case of a Franciscan Marian Shrine of strong pilgrim tradition, the prayer of Rosary can be considered an ordinary and natural component of the piety that is lived there, especially around the solemnity of the Assumption. In the Marian spirituality of the Church, the glorious mysteries of the Rosary - and in particular the fourth mystery, the Assumption of Mary - offer a privileged framework for contemplating the mystery that gives name to the sanctuary, helping pilgrims to join their outer pilgrimage to an inner pilgrimage of faith, hope and consecration to Christ through the Virgin.
