As for the tradition and legend, various local French sources present the Virgin of Orcival within the symbolic set of the "vierges noires" of Auvergne, often associated with prodigious findings or old pilgrimage routes; however, these stories are not always based on contemporary documents to the facts. The legends often insist on the protection of the Virgin over the mountainous region and the rural communities around it, but the specific details (apparitions, miraculous findings of the image, prodigious interventions in wars or epidemics) do not accurately record in the accessible historical sources.

There is no record of a Colombian origin of this advocation under the name "Our Lady of Orcival" associated with a sanctuary in the region of Auvernia-Rhone-Alpes of Colombia; the documented devotion refers to the French sanctuary, located in Orcival, department of Puy-de-Dôme, region of Auvernia-Rhódano-Alpes, France. The image and the sanctuary

The image of Our Lady of Orcival is a Saying Virgin with the Child Jesus, of a Romanesque style, classified among the famous Vírgenes Negras de Auvernia. It is a wood carving, coated and polychrome, of the type throne of wisdom (Sedes Sapientiae), in which the Virgin appears intonized, frontal, with the Child on her knees, following the typical iconography of the 12th century in the region. The dark tone of the size and its historical patina have motivated its inclusion among the "noires vierges," a group of medieval Marian images particularly venerated in the French Central Massif.

The main sanctuary is the Basilica of Our Lady of Orcival (Basil Notre-Dame d'Orcival), auvernese Romanesque temple located in the town of Orcival (postal code 63210, Puy-de-Dôme). The church, of a basic plant with transept and a step header with a walking and radiant chapels, is considered one of the masterpieces of the Romanesque of Auvergne. It's classified as basilica and is among the five great Romanesque churches of the region, which gives it a prominent place in both the history of art and the spiritual geography of France. The temple remains open all year round, with extensive visiting hours, and hosts Sunday and festive liturgical celebrations, as well as daily mass in the crypt during the months of June to September.

Party and devotion

La main feast and great pilgrimage of Our Lady of Orcival traditionally takes place the day of the Ascension of the Lordwhen many pilgrims come to the Roman Basilica to honor the Black Virgin and participate in the Eucharist and processions. This pilgrimage of Ascension is one of the most significant in the region, in continuity with a tradition of centuries that links the liturgical calendar to the rhythms of rural and mountain life.

In addition to the pilgrimage of Ascension, the basilica welcomes throughout the year a constant flow of visitors and faithful, both for reasons of devotion and cultural tourism. Religious services are held on Sundays and holidays at 11: 00, and daily in the crypt at 11: 30 during the months of June to September, which allows pilgrims to integrate the visit to the image of the Virgin with participation in the Eucharist. Devotion is characterized by the respectful veneration of the image, silent prayer to the Black Virgin and participation in liturgical celebrations; public sources do not detail figures of influx or accurately describe specific popular traditions (votes, exvotes, external processions, etc.), so those elements cannot be strictly affirmed.

In the Colombian context, there is no liturgical feast of its own or specific pilgrimages dedicated to Our Lady of Orcival in diocesan or national calendars. If there is any private or local devotion, it does not appear in verifiable sources.

Link to the Rosary

The fountains available on the Basilica of Our Lady of Orcival and her Black Virgin do not explicitly mention a particular association with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, the Rosary's cofradies, the Rosary's parties linked to the sanctuary or specific indulgences linked to this prayer in Orcival). Therefore, there is no historical-documented specific link between this advocation and devotion to the Rosary.

From a general Marian perspective, the veneration of Our Lady of Orcival, as an enthroned Virgin who presents Christ, is naturally aligned with the spirituality of the Rosarywhich consists in contemplating, with Mary, the mysteries of the life of Christ. The iconography of the Seating Virgin with the Child evokes what the Rosary proposes in the joyful mysteries: the Incarnation and the hidden life of Jesus with his Mother.
