Marian devotion
Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of Peace in Akamaru, on the Gambier Islands, was consecrated by Father Honoré Laval on October 11, 1845. It maintains a cherished pilgrimage tradition: every July, its small iron statue of the Virgin and Child travels to Rikitea Cathedral and returns to Akamaru on August 15 (the Assumption). The altarpiece features a necklace of black pearls.
Party and devotion
A vibrant and unique Marian pilgrimage in Polynesia. Devotion is a defining characteristic of its community.
Link to the Rosary
In the most remote islands of the Pacific, where faith often arrived by sea, the Rosary remains the simple prayer that unites every heart with Mary, from island to island and from generation to generation.
