Origin and history

According to local tradition, the image of Our Lady of the Consuelo of Pivašiūnai (Mother of the Pivašiūnai God, Soothing of the Sadly - Consoladora de los Afligidos) habría sido venerada desde ancia en la región de Dzūkija, encontrado a la piety Marian popular y a la festa de la Asunción (Žolinė), muy engrada en el campo Lithuanian. As for the documented history, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pivašiūnai (Alytus region) is an important pilgrimage center at least since the 20th century, especially around the feast of the Assumption. An official source of pilgrimage routes in Lithuania (John Paul II Road) states that there is a eight day feast in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin, attracting numerous pilgrimages, especially on foot. In the context of Lithuania's religious renaissance before independence, the image of Pivašiūnai is of national relevance, and in 1988 it receives the crown, a gesture that marks its recognition as an important Marian icon; however, the previous historical details of the image (author, exact date of creation, transfers, etc.) do not accurately record in the sources consulted in Spanish.

The image and the sanctuary

The Spanish and English sources on the concrete image of Our Lady of the Consuelo of Pivašiūnai are very limited. The icon type (si es tabla pintada, relieve, escultura de talla completa, etc.), ni el material nor a detailed iconographic description (child Jesus position, attributes, artistic style, date of realization). Since there are no verifiable data from the sources consulted, no consta a precise description of the image beyond its character as a venerated and crowned Marian icon.

The sanctuary is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pivašiūnai (in Lithuanian, church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Pivašiūnai), located in the region of Alytus, in the historical area of Dzūkija. According to a Spanish heritage guide, it is a Catholic temple dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, which is part of the "Lithuania Grand Tour," without further architectural details. The page on the "Way of John Paul II" in Lithuania indicates that this church is a prominent destination of pilgrimagesespecially during the annual feast of the Assumption. It is not found in the consulted sources that the temple has the title of minor basilica It is formally declared National sanctuaryIt can therefore be said only that it is a Marian sanctuary of great importance. regional and national de factobut no specific title known in the accessible documentation.

Sponsorship and coronation

Our Lady of the Consuelo of Pivašiūnai is venerated as spiritual patron of the Dzūkija region and, in a special way, of the faithful who pilgrim to Pivašiūnai in search of comfort in trials and afflictions. The invocation "Consoladora de los Afligidos" suggests a particular patronage over those who suffer and seek relief in the intercession of the Virgin. The sources consulted do not contain a formal proclamation as patron of all Lithuania, nor a specific decree of patronage for a particular diocese; it is, above all, a devotional and regional patronage.

La imagen mariana de Pivašiūnai fue coronada en 1988in a context of strong religious rebirth before Lithuanian independence. However, in the verifiable sources consulted no con seguridad which is a canonical coronation in the technical-legal sense (i.e. granted by decree of the Holy See with express indication of the Pope or his delegate). No clear mention has been found of the pontiff who approved the coronation or of the pontifical delegate who presided over it. Therefore, according to the above rules, it should be said: does not contain a documented canonical coronation, although it is documented that the image was crowned in 1988 as a public sign of veneration.

Party and devotion

The main feast linked to this advocation is celebrated around the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary15 August, known in Lithuania as Herbal infusions. The church of Pivašiūnai welcomes a eight day party (octave) in honor of the Assumption, which has become one of the most important religious quotes in the region, with a strong dimension of penitential pilgrimage and thanksgiving.

According to information from the pilgrimage itinerary of John Paul II, the church of Pivašiūnai is a the main destination of pilgrims, especially on foot, during this eighth of the Assumption. The faithful come to participate in the Eucharist, confess, renew promises and ask for the protection of the Virgin, similar to other Lithuanian Marian shrines. In the context of the spiritual revival of Lithuania described by the "Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania," the great Marian concentrations included intense preaching, renewal of Christian life and concrete promises (for example, moderation or abstinence in the use of alcohol) as the fruit of conversion. Although the text of the Chronicle does not only refer to Pivašiūnai, it reflects the spiritual climate in which pilgrimages such as those of this sanctuary develop.

There are no precise figures of the number of pilgrims in the Spanish sources consulted, but the official pages of pilgrimage routes underline the massive and stable nature of these annual visits.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted do not explicitly describe a particular devotion to the Rosary own and differentiated from the shrine of Pivašiūnai (for example, specific or indulgences linked to the recitation of the Rosary in this place). Therefore, no consta a special and unique relationship between this advocation and the Rosary beyond the ordinary Marian practice of the Church.

However, from a mariological and pastoral perspective, devotion to Our Lady of the Consuelo of the Afligids is deeply harmonized with the prayer of Rosary. In Pivašiūnai, pilgrims who come to seek comfort, light and strength in the midst of difficulties can contemplate, through the mysteries of the Rosary, the life of Christ next to Mary, finding in every joyful, luminous, painful and glorious mystery a path of hope and intercession. The penitential and conversion character that marked the spiritual renaissance in Lithuania fits the Rosary as school of prayer and change of life, so that this advocation, even without specific data on its own rosarian practices, is fully incorporated in the great Marian current of the Rosary that runs through the universal Church.
