Marian devotion
Our Lady of Rocamadour
The Black Madonna of the Cliff · Lot (France)
Perched on a cliff in the Lot region of southwestern France, the Rocamadour sanctuary houses a small Black Madonna venerated by pilgrims since the Middle Ages, on one of the great routes to Santiago de Compostela.

Origin and history
Tradition links the origin of the cult to the discovery of the incorrupt body of a hermit named Amador and to an early devotion in the 12th century, when the sanctuary began to receive pilgrims. An ancient "Book of Miracles" recorded the graces attributed to the Virgin, a detail derived from devotional tradition.
Historically, the Marian complex at Rocamadour has been documented since at least the 12th century and became a major pilgrimage center, linked to the routes to Santiago de Compostela, which spread devotion to it throughout Spain and Portugal. The current image is a seated, wooden Black Madonna with the Child on her left knee.
