Marian devotion
Our Lady of Sancho Abarca
The Virgin of the Bardenas · Tauste (Zaragoza)
On a rocky spur that dominates the Bardenas and the Vega del Ebro, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Sancho Abarca is the centre of the Romeria of Tauste and of the neighbouring villages, also Navarre.
Origin and history
The tradition places the finding of the image on April 7, 1569, Holy Thursday, by a name-named Rongali pastor Ibar, among the ruins of the castle of Sancho Abarca; taken to Tauste, the archbishop of Zaragoza resolved in his favor. The image is a Gothic size of the 14th century, about 27 cm.
The sanctuary was built between 1670 and 1703, on a head that dominates the Royal Bardenas and the Vega of the Ebro; Marian devotion in Tauste dates back at least to the conquest of 1121. The image was placed in the chapel of the Virgin of the Rosary before moving to its own chapel. It was canonically crowned in 1969.
