This first memory is of a pious and legendary character: the current sources present it as devotional tradition, as a strictly historical document.

As for the documented history, various sources point out that devotion in Šaštín is already attested in the 16th century, and that the place gradually became a point of Marian pilgrimage at regional and then national level. The presence of the image of the Virgin of the Seven Dolores in Šaštin gave rise to a sanctuary that was growing over time, particularly from the Modern Age and with the impulse of religious orders and the ecclesiastical hierarchy. In contemporary times, the sanctuary was recognized as minor basilica y national sanctuary of Slovakiaand has been the framework of important ecclesial events, including the visit of San Juan Pablo II (1995) y la del Pope Francis (2021), who there closed his apostolic journey to Slovakia on the Solemnity of the Virgin of the Seven Dolores.

The image and the sanctuary

The venerated image in Šaštín is a representation of the Virgin Dolorosa in the form of Mercy (Mary with the body of Christ dead), linked to the spirituality of the Seven Dolores of Mary tan arraigada en Eslovaquia. La escultura es una package imageplaced on the main altar of the basilica; it is a size that shows the compassionate Mother holding her Son after the crucifixion, iconography that condemns Mary's pains at the foot of the cross. The sources consulted highlight the spiritual importance of the sculpture and its relationship with the vote of Angelika Bakičová, but do not clearly contain accurate technical data in the general sources used (exact type of wood, original author, etc.), so they cannot be safely detailed.

The sanctuary is named after Basilica of the Seven Dolores of the Virgin Mary in Šaštin and is located in Shaštine-Watchingin the present region of Trnava, in the western part of Slovakia. It is officially recognized as minor basilica y National sanctuary of Slovakia, dedicated to the country's patron. The whole includes the church and conventual dependencies, and is one of the largest pilgrimage centres in the country. The architecture and decoration reflect the long history of the place, with a temple of great proportions, designed to host crowds, and a liturgical space oriented to the veneration of the Dolored Mother. Various sources also highlight the pastoral presence of the Salesian family, in charge of the care of the sanctuary at present.

Our Lady of the Seven Dolores of Šaštin is patrona principal de Eslovaquiarecognition confirmed by the national celebration of its solemnity 15 September and the constant reference of the Church in Slovakia and the Holy See to the Virgin of the Seven Dolores as "patron of Slovakia." His sanctuary in Šaštin is thus considered the great National Marian Sanctuary of the country.

On a canonical coronation of the image, the sources consulted (international Catholic press, Vatican news and articles of dissemination on the sanctuary) do not explicitly mention a canonical coronation with a clearly documented date and pontifical delegate. Therefore, following the above criteria: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

La main party of Our Lady of the Seven Dolores, patron of Slovakia, is celebrated the 15 Septemberin the liturgical memory of the Virgin of the Dolores, recognized throughout the calendar of the Latin Church. In Slovakia this date is a great national solemnity, with celebrations presided over by the bishops and sometimes by the Pope himself, as happened in 2021 with Francis's visit to the Basilica of Šaštin.

Šaštín is one of the centres of most important Marian pilgrimage of the country: in the Solemnity of September 15, 2021 they gathered there More than 50,000 pilgrims for the Mass with Pope Francis. The sanctuary hosts pilgrimages throughout the year, but especially around the September feast, with faithful who come to trust the Virgin Dolorosa with her personal, family and social suffering. Devotion is expressed in the meditation of the Seven Dolores of Maryin processions, confessions, Eucharistic worship and Marian celebrations of the Slovak tradition, in which the closeness of Mary to those who suffer, in the history of the country marked by wars, totalitarianism and trials, as Pope Francis recalled in his homily in the basilica, is highlighted.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted highlight the devotion to the Seven Dolores of Mary as a specific feature of the sanctuary, rather than a particular practice of the Rosary of Šaštín. There is no unique form of the Rosary that is exclusively linked to this image (for example, a "rosary of its own" with specific promises or formulas), nor an official institution that directly identifies it with a specific form of the Rosary in the general sources used; does not contain an exclusive link or a unique documented rosarian practice.

However, the spirituality of the Seven Dolores is naturally integrated in the prayer of Rosary y de diversos Doloric rosarios (like the rosary of the Seven Dolores, spread especially by the servants of Mary and by the Slovak tradition). Mary's contemplation at the foot of the cross, holding the body of Christ - as the image of Šaštin shows - illuminates the painful mysteries of the Rosary and helps to live the Rosary as a school of compassion, de intercession for those who suffer y de trust in God in the midst of trials. In this sense, even if there is no strictly documented rite of its own, the Rosary is an ordinary path of Marian prayer for pilgrims who come to Šaštin, who find in the Virgin of the Seven Dolores a model of perseverant faith linked to the redeeming sacrifice of Christ.
