Documented history. The sources on the Church in Albania point out that from a very ancient time there was a Santuario mariano en Shkodra, considered one of the best known in the country, with roots that go back at least to Christian Antiquity. The city was an important Catholic center in northern Albania, although Ottoman occupation and later communist persecution destroyed or transformed many places of worship. In the 20th century, the Marxist-Leninist repression was particularly hard: in 1967 Albania officially declared itself Atheist Statechurches were closed and all religious manifestations prohibited. After the fall of the regime in the 1990s, the restoration and reopening of the Catholic temples, including the Cathedral of Shkodra, which became a visible sign of the rebirth of Christian life and Marian devotion in the country.
The image and the sanctuary
The image. The title "Our Lady of Shkodra" refers originally to a fresh Marian venerated in the Shkodra region, from which the sources describe an image of the Virgin with the Child, in attitude of tenderness and maternal protection. The iconography is linked to the Mother who holds and shows Christ, close to the type of Our Lady of the Good Council. The current situation of a medieval original in Shkodra is not clear; the memory of the image is mainly preserved in tradition and in subsequent copies or representations. So, more than a concrete size, the advocation today works as a Marian title linked to the city and its history, present in various images in temples of the area.
The catedral-sanctuary. En Shkodra se eleva la la Catholic Cathedral of the city, known as the main church of the local Catholic community and traditionally dedicated to the Virgin (in the tourist sources it is simply mentioned as "Shkoder Catholic Cathedral"). It was built in the 19th century and stands out for its great dimensions and its imposing ship, which make it one of the most significant Catholic temples in Albania. During the communist regime it was closed and destined for profane uses, and only after 1990 was it restored as a church, becoming a symbol of the resistance and rebirth of faith. It is not clear that the cathedral has received the title of minor basilica nor a formal declaration as a national sanctuary; the Marian sanctuary explicitly called "Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Good Council" in Shkodra corresponds to a Marian church of the city used by the Roman Catholic community, different from the cathedral.
Together, the memory of Our Lady of Shkodra today is linked both to the tradition of the ancient Marian sanctuary of the city and to the role of the restored cathedral as a great Marian temple in northern Albania.
Sponsorship and coronation
Sources indicate that Our Lady of Shkodra is seen in popular piety as Protection of Shkodra and Northern Albaniaespecially in relation to the historical suffering of the people under Ottoman occupation and communist persecution. However, the documentation consulted does not contain a modern formal proclamation as the principal patron of the diocese or of the nation under this specific title; Marian devotion in Albania is expressed through several sanctuaries and titles (including Our Lady of the Good Council and other advocacy).
About a canonical coronation specific to an image of Our Lady of Shkodra in Shkodra Cathedral, the sources consulted do not mention any documented act, no pontifical decree, no officially recognized ceremony. Therefore, it should be strictly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
The Marian devotion in Albania knows a great vitality after the fall of the atheist regime, as an expression of the Church's rebirth in the country. However, with regard specifically to the Our Lady of Shkodra as its own title, the sources consulted do not indicate a specific liturgical date officially recognized for the whole local Church. There is therefore no feast of this advocation in the diocesan or national calendar; Marian piety is more widely channelled through universal Marian parties (Asunción, Immaculate, etc.) and other sanctuaries such as Our Lady of the Good Council in Shkodra.
A strong Marian attachment of the Albanian peoplewith great participation in the Marian celebrations and pilgrimages to the shrines of the north of the country. After 1990, the reconstruction of the churches and the reopening of the Shkodra Cathedral have encouraged a growing presence of faithful in the great Marian solemnities, which are lived as a memory of the martyrs, thanksgiving for the freedom recovered and consecration of the future of the country to the intercession of the Virgin. There are no official inflow statistics specifically linked to Our Lady of Shkodra, but the testimonies describe a massive participation in the Marian celebrations in Shkodra and other centers in the northern Catholic.
Link to the Rosary
The available sources do not document a specific link to history between the advocation of Our Lady of Shkodra and a particular practice of Rosary (as it could be, for example, an explicit title of "Our Lady of the Rosary"). There is therefore no tradition of the prayer of the Rosary linked to a concrete image of Our Lady of Shkodra in the cathedral.
However, the strong Marian identity of the Albanian Catholic community, especially in the north of the country and around Shkodra, makes the Rosary one of the usual forms of prayer in families and parishes. In a context marked by the persecution and forced silence of the faith, the Rosary became for many Christians a simple and discreet prayer, able to be prayed in the privacy of the home, in work camps or in situations of risk. In this way, even if the documentation does not describe a specific liturgical association, the Rosario in fact accompanies devotion to Our Lady of Shkodrahelping the faithful to meditate on the mysteries of Christ in the hand of Mary and to keep alive the memory of the Mother's protection of the Virgin over her
