Main data
Origin and history
The shrine of Skalka, near Trencin (town of Skalka nad Váhom, Western Slovakia), is traditionally considered the oldest pilgrimage place in Slovakia, linked to the eremite saints Andrés-Svorad (Andrej-Svorad) y Benito..
According to the traditionIn the 11th century, these Benedictine eremites lived in a cave dug in the rock over the river. Weight, leading a life of penance and prayer; Benito would have suffered martyrdom in this place, thrown from the rock by psalteers, and his body, according to legend, was guarded by fish until found incorruted. This tradition of erectic holiness gave the place a character of "holy mountain," of retreat and conversion.
As for the documented historythe cult of --n Andrés-Svorad yn Beito it was consolidated in the Middle Ages in the region of Nitra and Trenčin, and that the rock of Skalka was soon associated with its memory as a place of pilgrimage, although the precise data of the foundation of the Marian sanctuary are not clear in the sources consulted. The current configuration of the Skalka complex (upper shrine on the rock and lower enclosure with church and monastery) responds to a later development, especially from the Baroque era, when the veneration of the eremite saints was renewed and the Marian devotion on the spot. Since the available sources focus mainly on the general nature of the sanctuary and its inclusion on Marian routes, no constan with certainty exact dates of erection of the Marian sanctuary or specific documents of canonical erection in the material consulted.
The image and the sanctuary
The accessible sources clearly describe Skalka as the church sanctuary and pilgrimagebut no consta a detailed, verifiable and precise description of the concrete image of "Our Lady of Skalka" (type of size or painting, material, specific iconography). The documentation consulted on Marian routes and shrines in the area refers to the Marian character of the place, but does not provide technical data on a canonically recognized main image entitled "Our Lady of Skalka."
El santuario se estructura en dos áreas tradicionales: – La Skalka superioron the rock above the river Váh, with the Eremite cave y una pequeña capilla, lugar de gran simbolismo penitencial y contemplativo. – La Skalka lower, more accessible, where is the parish church and conventual dependencies (monastery) that welcome the pilgrims.
In the documentation of Marian itineraries Skalka is presented as a sanctuary with strong historical, spiritual and Marian imprint, but no consta holding the title of minor basilicanor that it has been declared a national sanctuary; it is a diocesan / historical sanctuary of pilgrimageintegrated into the Marian routes linking Poland and Slovakia.
Sponsorship and coronation
The Skalka set is primarily linked to the memory of --n Andrés-Svorad yn Beito, very venerated in the region of Trenčin and in the Slovak Church, so the main weight of patronage lies with these eremite saints. The Marian dimension of the place appears associated with the rock and the life of prayer, and is integrated into the broader framework of the Marian Slovak devotion, strongly marked at national level by Virgin of the Seven Dolores, patron of Slovakia.
No explicit references to an official proclamation of Our Lady of Skalka as principal patron of the city of Trenčín, the municipality of Skalka nad Váhom, the diocese or the Slovak nation. So, as for a specific Marian patronage under this title, does not contain.
Nor has mention been found of a canonical coronation of a concrete image of "Our Lady of Skalka" (with a pontifical decree or formally registered episcopal delegation). In the absence of documented data from the sources consulted, it should be stated that does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
The liturgical and devotional life of Skalka revolves, especially, around the memory of Saint Andrés-Svorad and Saint Benitowith pilgrimages that flow into the rock and cave where, according to tradition, they lived and where Benito would have been martyred. The pilgrimages acquire a marked penance and quiet contemplation, very in line with the rocky landscape on the Váh River and the atmosphere of ancient hermitage.
In the country as a whole, the Feast of the Virgin of the Seven Dolores, patron of Slovakia, which also marks the Marian tone of many shrines of the territory. However, no consta an officially established date, in the sources consulted, as The liturgical feast of "Our Lady of Skalka" with diocesan or national rank. Marian devotion in the sanctuary seems to be expressed, rather, within the general rhythm of the pilgrimages to Skalka and the feasts of the Eremite saints.
In the pastoral practice of the sanctuary, as it appears from its inclusion in the Camino Mariano from Poland to Slovakia, la devoción mariana se manifiesta en: – peregrinaciones a pie y en grupo; – celebraciones eucarísticas y posibilidad de confesión; – oración silenciosa en la cueva y ante las imágenes marianas presentes en el complejo sacro.
No official inflow figures or detailed descriptions of specific popular traditions (specific processions, votes, promises with own rites) have been found, so at this point, no constan quantifiable data.
Link to the Rosary
The information available on the Skalka shrine and its insertion into the Marian routes does not find an explicit and documented reference to a practice of the Rosary uniquely and exclusively linked to the advocation of "Our Lady of Skalka" (for example, a particular form of Rosary, specific promises or messages linked to this prayer). Therefore, as regards a special and documented link, no consta.
Although there is no "Rosary of Skalka" documented, the Marian devotion of the sanctuary is deeply harmonized with the Rosary prayerwho quietly accompanies the life of pilgrimage, penance and contemplation that characterizes this place of grace.
