Main data
Origin and history
It has not been found in the open sources of reference (official pages of the sanctuary or of the diocese, international Catholic press or usual encyclopedic bases) a accessible and documented synthesis in Spanish on the Invocation of Nuestra Señora de Skępe; the information available online in Western languages is almost exclusively focused on other major Marian shrines in Poland (Częstochowa, Gietrzwałd, etc.). Therefore, many details of this sheet are not safely recorded in the consulting sources.
In Polish religious tradition, Skępe is known as former regional Marian pilgrimage site, located in the current voivodship of Cuyavia and Pomerania. However, the revised sources do not contain, in a verifiable manner, a detailed legendary account of the "miraculous origin" of the image (apparition, prodigious finding, transfer by any specific noble or religious, etc.); therefore, does not contain a specific foundational tradition sufficiently documented in accessible sources.
From the perspective of the documented history, it can be said in general that Poland had a remarkable rise of Marian shrines between the 17th and 18th centuries, with the multiplication of venerated images, coronations and pilgrimage centres, both national and regional. In this historical context the Skępe shrine is entered, but the exact dates of the beginning of the local cult, its first custodians (religious orders) and the main milestones of its development no constan with the accuracy required to be reproduced here without risk of inaccuracy.
The image and the sanctuary
The sources consulted in Spanish and in the revised international Catholic channels do not provide a reliable and detailed description of the concrete image venerated as Mother of Boża Skępska: the iconographic type (for example, if it is an icon in the oriental mode, a Renaissance / baroque painting, or a sculpture), or its material (painted table, canvas, carved wood, etc.) and own iconographic details (position of the Child Jesus, attributes, inscriptions, etc.). Therefore, at this point, no consta a documented iconographic description.
In the same way, although it is known that in Skępe there is a Marian sanctuary de importancia regionalthe accessible sources do not offer a complete and verifiable presentation in Spanish of official name, architectural style and specific canon range (minor basilica, national sanctuary, diocesan sanctuary, etc.). Therefore, and following the criterion of rigour, it can only be said that In Skępe (voivodship of Cuyavia and Pomerania, Poland) is a historical Marian sanctuary, linked to devotion to Our Lady of Skępe, with mainly regional roots, while other architectural and canon data no consta with security in the revised sources.
Sponsorship and coronation
La advocación de Our Lady of Skępe se vincula a un essentially local and regionalaround the city or municipality of Skępe and its surroundings. No reliable references have been found to be presented as a national patron of Poland; National patronagethe place it occupies in an eminent way is that of Our Lady of Częstochowa, recognized as Queen and Protector of Poland and solemnly crowned, with pontifical coronation, in 1717.
As for a canonical coronation specific to the image of Our Lady of Skępe (with pontifical crowns granted by the Holy See, indicating year and pontiff or delegate), in the revised sources does not contain a documented canonical coronation. No coronation decrees or news have been found in the international Catholic press to mention it among the officially crowned Polish Marian images.
Party and devotion
The sources consulted do not provide an unequivocal date for the fiesta principal litúrgica From Our Lady of Skępe. It is therefore not known whether it is held on a local own date or if it is associated, for example, with some great Marian holiday of the calendar (Nativity of Mary, Asunción, etc.). The date of the main party does not record for sure.
In the Polish religious context, Marian shrines - especially those with historical roots - are often the destination of walking or group pilgrimagesparticularly in the spring and summer months, and around the Marian parties. It is reasonable to assume that Skępe is involved in this same dynamic of regional pilgrimagewith the participation of nearby and faithful parishes who come to the Mass, to the confession and to the prayer of the image of the Virgin; however, the available sources do not provide any figures of influx or describe in detail specific popular traditions (specific processions, promises, unique novies, etc.) linked to the Skępe shrine. Therefore, these data no constan with the required accuracy.
Link to the Rosary
No explicit and documented relationship between the advocation of Our Lady of Skępe and a particular practice of Rosary (e.g. special indulgences, canonically erected Rosary fellowship in the sanctuary, messages about the Rosary, etc.). In this regard, no consta a specific and own link between this advocation and the prayer of the Rosary.
However, within the framework of the Marian spirituality of Poland, the Rosary It occupies a very important place as a simple, biblical and contemplative prayer, spread intensively around the great sanctuaries - such as Częstochowa or Gietrzwałd, where the Virgin expressly asked the daily prayer of the Rosary to the seers. Although a unique link of Skępe with the Rosary cannot be documented, it is consistent to understand that the devotion to Our Lady of Skępe is usually accompanied by the prayer of the Rosaryas a privileged way of meditating on the mysteries of Christ in the company of Mary and of joining local piety with the great Marian movement of the universal Church.
