Marian vocation of Skoky (Žlutice) (Bohemia)

La advocación de Our Lady of Skoky (en checo Virgin María Skokovská, also known as Mariastock) is linked to a Marian image venerated since the 17th century in the Church of the Visitation in the small town of Skoky, near Žlutice, in the region of Western Bohemia (now Czech Republic). The local tradition speaks of a miraculous image that soon attracted many pilgrims from the Bohemia region, to turn the place into one of the important Marian shrines of the area. Origin and history

However, the legendary details of the original "first grace" or miracle do not accurately reflect the sources consulted; therefore, a concrete and documented foundation legend of the sanctuary cannot be rigorously rebuilt.

As for the documented history, the sources point out that it is a sanctuary of Baroque origin, active already in the XVII-XVIII century, that it has known a significant influx of pilgrims during the time when Bohemia was part of the domains of the Habsburg and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire, within a strong context of regional Marian piety (particularly in the present Czech Republic and German-speaking areas). After the political changes of the twentieth century (world wars, the expulsion of the German-speaking population and the communist period), the place remained virtually abandoned and isolated, suffering a severe deterioration. In recent decades, associations of faithful and cultural entities have worked in the restoration of the church and in the recovery of the pilgrimages and the traditional devotion to the Virgin of Skoky, so that today the sanctuary, although isolated, is again a spiritual and heritage point of reference in the region. They do not contain, in the verified sources, exact dates of foundation or of very precise historical milestones (such as specific solemn consecration), beyond their baroque origin and recent revitalization; therefore, many chronological details remain to be documented with certainty.

The image and the sanctuary

The invocation focuses on a magen mataras of the 17th century, venerated under the title of Virgin María Skokovská. There is no complete technical description of the type of image in the accessible sources (whether it is painting on board or canvas, wood sculpture or other material) or its detailed iconography (for example, if it represents the Virgin with the Child, Immaculate type, Virgin of the Visitation, etc.). No precise measures or certified data on specific authorship are available. What does appear repeatedly is that it is considered a "Miraculous" image for the many graces attributed to the intercession of the Virgin invoked under this title, and which was part of the rich heritage of the pilgrimage images of the Baroque Bohemia. In the absence of more specific verifiable data, it should be clearly stated: no constain the sources consulted, a complete and strictly documented iconographic description of the image.

The sanctuary where this image is venerated is the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Skoky (in Czech, dedicated to the Visited by Virgin Mary). It is a baroque rural temple located in a place today isolated, within the term Skoky (Žlutice), in Western Bohemia, in the present Czech Republic. The church, historically linked to the diocese of the region (now part of the Catholic Church in Czech Republic), was a known pilgrimage sanctuary and, after a long period of abandonment and deterioration in the twentieth century, is in the process of restoration and value, both from a religious and cultural point of view. It is not known that the church has received the title of minor basilica nor that it has been declared a national sanctuary; it is a sanctuary of mainly regional or diocesan scope, of strong popular roots.

Sponsorship and coronation

In the documentation consulted no consta Our Lady of Skoky has been officially proclaimed as the principal patron of a city, municipality, diocese or Czech nation by a solemn Pontifical or Episcopal decree. The devotion has, rather, a alcance regionalas an important Marian sanctuary in the Skoky-Žlutice area and the Western Bohemia region, with a strong link to local popular religiosity and traditional pilgrimages.

On the canonical coronationin the sources verified on Marian coronations, lists of coronings and documentation relating to Marian sanctuaries, does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Skoky. The name of a papal or ordinary delegate of the place who solemnly carried out a coronation recognized by the Holy See is not mentioned either date or pontifical decree. It should therefore be stated, according to the available data: does not contain a documented canonical coronation for this advocation.

Party and devotion

European Marian shrines often have a main party well associated with the title of the church (in this case, the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, liturgical on May 31 in the current Roman calendar), or to the traditional date of a greater pilgrimage. However, for the concrete advocation of Our Lady of Skoky, in the sources consulted No unambiguous statement a specific or different holiday date of its own that can be cited with full certainty as "the" main feast of the advocation. The main celebration may have been traditionally linked to the celebration of the Visitation or some date of summer pilgrimages, but in the absence of clear documentation, it should be indicated: no consta with certainty a specific and differentiated liturgical date.

What is clearly reflected in the information available is the existence, since the Baroque era, of pilgrimages frequent to the sanctuary, which made Skoky a known place of Marian grace for the faithful of the region. After the almost disappearance of the cult during the 20th century, today there have been retaken processions and pilgrimages - often on foot, on rural roads - towards the Church of the Visitation in Skoky, in an effort to revitalizing popular devotion. There are no exact figures of influx (annual number of pilgrims, etc.), but current chronicles describe a gradual growth of interest in the sanctuary, both among the faithful and among those who value its historical and artistic heritage. Among the devotional features of their own, the silent prayer to the image of the Virgin, the celebration of the Eucharist on specified occasions, and the practice of promises and thanksgiving for favors received, in continuity with the ancient tradition of "miraculous image" of the place, are mentioned in a generic way.

Link to the Rosary

In the specific documentation on the Skoky shrine no consta a particular historical relationship of the advocation with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, co-fradies of the Rosary founded there, self-indulgences linked to the prayer of the Rosary in that temple, or concrete apparitions and messages focused on this prayer). The devotion to Our Lady of Skoky is rather part of the wide tradition of Marian shrines of Central Europe, where the Rosary is present as one of the usual forms of Marian piety, with no known distinctive features.

From a general Marian perspective, the devoción al Rosario It is natural in harmony with the worship of Our Lady of Skoky: the Rosary allows us to meditate on the mysteries of Christ's life with the eyes of Mary and at the same time to express confidence in the maternal intercession of the venerated Virgin in her miraculous image. In an isolated and silent sanctuary like Skoky, the paused prayer of the Rosary becomes a privileged form of inner pilgrimage: each avemaria accompanies the path of the pilgrim seeking comfort, conversion and strength in the faith, offering to the Virge
