Origin and history
According to local tradition, the Sonntagberg has been a place of Marian pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, when an ancient image of the Virgin was venerated on the hill and special thanks were attributed to her intercession. However, the initial accounts of early miracles and devotions are not supported by precise documentation of specific dates or protagonists, so they are considered of a pious and legendary character; on specific extraordinary apparitions or events no consta an official narrative recognized by the diocese.
In the documented history, the origin of the sanctuary is located 1440, when the abbot Benedict I of the Benedictine monastery of Seitenstetten ordered to build a small chapel at the summit of the Sonntagberg, in the region of Mostviertel (Lower Austria), which soon became the goal of pilgrimage. With the growth of devotion, the chapel was extended and, in the 17th-18th centuries, the great Baroque complex that is preserved was raised, shaping one of the most important Marian shrines in Austria. The sanctuary is part of the diocese of St. Pölten (Lower Austria) and has since maintained a constant flow of pilgrims, especially from the surrounding region.
The image and the sanctuary
En Sonntagberg se venera a la Our Lady of Sonntagberg under the title of Nativity of Mary, en la Basilica of the Nativity of Mary of Sonntagberg (Basilika Sonntagberg). The present church is an imposing Baroque temple, of great dimensions, visible from much of the Mostviertel, configured as a pilgrimage sanctuary on the top of a hill. The set includes the church, adjacent buildings and reception spaces for pilgrims, with a rich baroque decoration in the interior. The church has been recognized as basilica (minor basilica), although the date of this concession is not clear from the sources consulted.
The available online sources describe the place mainly as church of pilgrimage y basilica (basilica), but no consta a detailed description of the imagen mariana principal (material, size or specific iconography). It is known that devotion focuses on the Virgin Mary under the mystery of her Nativity, usual in the Germanic sphere, but no official iconographic fiche has been found in the sources consulted (for example, whether it is a polychrome wood sculpture or an altar painting). In the absence of reliable data, the exact typology of the image cannot be strictly described.
Sponsorship and coronation
