Origin and history

Documented history

The monastery of Studenica (Манастир Студеница / Manastir Studenica) is located about 39 km south-west of Kraljevo, in the district of Raška, the historical heart of central Serbia. It was founded towards 1190 por Stefan Nemaña, founder of the medieval Serbian state, who endowed it as its main monastic foundation and dynastic mausoleum.

The main church of the monastery is dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commonly known as "Church of the Virgin." Built in white marble, is a basilica of a single vaulted ship, with trilateral apse to the east and nartex to the west, and is considered one of the most important examples of the school of architecture of Raška, which combines Byzantine space structure with outer forms and finishes of Romanesque inspiration. Since the 12th century, the monastic life in Studenica has not been interrupted, which became the largest and richest Serbian monastery.

The monastery was extended by various rulers of the Nemanjić dynasty, and in the 14th century the call was added, among other buildings, church of the King (of the saints Joaquin and Anne), with a remarkable cycle of frescoes. From the 15th century, the complex suffered from the siege and looting of Ottomans, and later earthquakes and fires that damaged part of its heritage, although they have been preserved fresh and relics of great value. In 1986 Unesco included the monastery of Studenica in the List of Mundial Heritageand its frescoes of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Tradition and spiritual consciousness

Current sources of dissemination describe Studenica as the Most sacred place of worship for the Serbian Orthodox Church y la main church of all Serbian temples, highlighting that the tomb of Stefan Nemaña turned the monastery into a model and inspiration for other royal monastic and mausoleum centers. The Marian veneration in Studenica is part of the deep devotion of the Serbian Orthodox Church to the Bogorodica (Mother of God), seen as a protector of the people and the nascent State; this interpretation has a strong theological and symbolic weight, although it cannot always be documented in detail for every local tradition in the medieval centuries.

The image and the sanctuary

The Marian Image

The sources consulted describe in detail the arquitectura and, above all, the fresh of the Church of the Virgin, but they do not explicitly point out a single imagen titular concrete (for example, an individualized miraculous icon) under the name "Our Lady of Studenica." In the interior of the church are preserved important Byzantine wall paintings of the 13th and 14th centuries, considered masterpieces of Serbian medieval art, which represent scenes of the life of Christ and of the Virgin, as well as figures of saints.

In the absence of specific data, no consta a detailed and unique description of a particular Marian icon that receives the official title of "Our Lady of Studenica."

The sanctuary

It does not know that the church of Studenica has the title of minor basilica (title of the Latin rite) National sanctuary by a Catholic instance; rather, it is one of the sanctuaries of the Serbian Orthodox Churchprotected by the State legislation of Serbia and recognized as World Heritage of UNESCO.

Sponsorship and coronation

Patronage

Las fuentes consultadas presentan a Studenica como: – el monasterio medieval more important de Serbia, – el most sacred place of worship para la Iglesia ortodoxa local, – y la main church between the Serbian temples.

In this context, it can be said that the Virgin venerated in Studenica exercises a spiritual patronage of national and ecclesial scope within the Serbian Orthodox tradition, although no specific legal proclamation of the patron of a city or diocese in the Latin way is mentioned. There are no precise "Patron of Serbia" definitions in the sources consulted; therefore, beyond this traditional and spiritual recognition, no consta a canonically declared patronage in Catholic terms.

Canonical coronation

No reference to a canonical coronation (according to the praxis of the Holy See or of Catholic authorities) of a concrete Marian image under the title of Our Lady of Studenica. Since it is a sanctuary of orthodox and that the available sources do not mention any coronation, it should be stated:

> does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

The main church is dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Byzantine calendar and in the Orthodox tradition, this feast is usually held November 21 (8 November according to the Julian calendar), but the sources consulted on Studenica do not explicitly specify the main local date of celebration. Therefore, with regard to a own party from "Our Lady of Studenica":

> does not contain a specific Marian holiday date documented for this advocation.

It is mentioned that the monastery is part of cultural itineraries (such as TransRomanesque Cultural Route) and that guided tours take place between 9: 00 and 17: 00, indicating a constant flow of pilgrims and tourists. However, no constan precise numerical flow data and detailed descriptions of tradition
