Main data
Origin and history
La advocación de Nuestra Señora de Studentna (Mother of the Student) is linked to the small Marian sanctuary located next to Lake Studzieniczne, in the vicinity of Augustów, in the region of Podlaquia (north-eastern Poland). This location is now integrated into the so-called "Church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Studzieniczna," that is, the Church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Studzieniczna.
Documented history. The historical sources show that in the place there was already a Marian hermitage and cult at least since the 18th century. The growing devotion to Our Lady led to the construction of a wooden church in 1786. Subsequently, due to the increase of pilgrims and the consolidation of veneration, a new temple was erected: the present church was built in 1847 to replace the previous wooden structure. Over time, the sanctuary was set up as a local and regional Marian pilgrimage centre.
In recent memory, the shrine of Studzieniczna has become especially known for the visit of San Juan Pablo IIwho went there during one of his apostolic trips to Poland, in the context of his pastoral and affective connection with the region of the lakes and with the Polish Marian piety in general (known in the historiography of his travels, although not detailed in the consulted source). There is no recognition of apparitions or a specific decree of the Holy See on this advocation in the verified sources; it is a sanctuary of popular devotion around a Marian image.
Tradition / legend. The sources consulted online for this sheet do not clearly and verifiably collect a precise foundational legend (for example, apparitions, miraculous finding of image or source, etc.) specifically linked to the advocation of "Matka Boża Studzieniczańska." Consequently, no consta in these sources a foundational tradition sufficiently documented to be described in detail without risk of confusion with other Polish Marian devotions.
The image and the sanctuary
The main church of the place is officially called Church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Studzieniczna (English, "Church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Studzieniczna"). It is a temple built in 1847, of simple style typical of the rural churches of the 19th century, which replaced an earlier wooden church of 1786. The ensemble is located in a landscape of lakes and forests, and the sanctuary is part of the devotional space that borders Lake Studzieniczne, with chapels and outdoor prayer areas.
The sources consulted do not describe the main image venerated as Our Lady of Studzieniczna (iconographic type, dimensions, material). No consta in these sources if it is a picture, icon or sculpture, or formal details about the representation (for example, if it holds the Child, if it carries scapular or other attributes). Since the parish bears the title of Our Lady of the Scapular, it is credible (but not documented in the sources used here) that the iconography is related to the scapular of Carmen; without an explicit description, this end should be considered as no constatado.
Nor does it indicate in the consulted sources that the church has the title of minor basilicanor that the sanctuary has been declared a national Marian sanctuary; by the information available it is a local Marian shrine/diocesan of great roots in the region, without the rank of basilica.
Sponsorship and coronation
No explicit statement of canonical patronage (for example, official patron of the diocese or the municipality of Augustine) for the advocation of Our Lady of Studzieniczna. Therefore, in terms of patronage no consta no official title beyond its status as a local Marian devotion center.
In relation to the canonical coronation of the image (i.e. coronation with crowns granted by the Holy See), the sources consulted do not mention any pontifical decree or act of canonical coronation of the Virgin of Studzieniczna. Unlike other Polish claims, such as the Virgin of Częstochowa, whose pontifical coronation is clearly documented, in this case does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
The verified sources do not indicate a fecha de fiesta litúrgica propia specifically linked to "Matka Boża Studzieniczańska." It is common in Poland that local shrines solemnly celebrate some Marian feast (for example, a Solemnity of the Virgin or a date linked to the history of the sanctuary), but in this particular case no consta a main date clearly documented in the sources consulted.
However, it is noted that the construction of the new church in 1847 responds to a "greater devotion to Our Lady" in the place, which implies the existence of pilgrimages and influx of faithful already in the 19th century. The sanctuary, on the banks of Lake Studzieniczne, is part of the pilgrimage routes of the region of Augustine and, by its location, combines prayer before the Virgin with an atmosphere of retreat and silence, much appreciated in contemporary Polish spirituality.
No specific statistical data on annual inflow or detailed description of specific popular traditions (processions, water blessings, parishes) have been found that can be mentioned rigorously; these aspects should therefore be considered as no constatados in the revised sources.
Link to the Rosary
The sources consulted do not mention a specific and explicit relationship of the advocation of Our Lady of Studzieniczna with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, apparitions asking for the Rosary, co-fradies of the Rosary of the sanctuary or particular indulgences linked to this practice). It should therefore be stated that no consta a unique link with the Rosary beyond the general practice of Marian piety.
However, in the Polish context, the Rosary is part of the daily devotion to the Virgin in almost all Marian sanctuaries: the prayer of the Rosary, the laurean litany and the ninth Marian are common ways of expressing trust in the intercession of Mary. In a sanctuary like Studzieniczna, where the faithful come to seek comfort, silence and encounter with God through Mary, the Rosary naturally becomes a "school of contemplation" of the mysteries of Christ next to his Mother. Thus, even if there is no particular legal or historical link with the Rosary, this prayer accompanies and supports the devotion to Our Lady of Studzieniczna part of the Marian espiritual heritage of Poland.

Pray Hail MaryDocumentary update: Studzieniczna
Studzieniczna is part of the Marian heritage of the diocese of Ełk, in the surroundings of Augustów. The sanctuary brings together a chapel, the Marian image and a well to which pilgrims come. The image is described as a copy of the icon of Częstochowa, dated in the 18th century; the current chapel belongs to the later constructive history of the place. These references make it possible to speak of a sanctuary and a documented Catholic cult without stating that the water of the well has produced recognized miracles: there is no decree declaring miraculous concrete cures.
The pontifical coronation of the image was held on 17 September 1995. On June 9, 1999, John Paul II visited Studzieniczna during his pilgrimage to Poland and prayed to the image; local sources remember his arrival by boat and his previous relationship with the place. The papal visit is a historical fact of pilgrimage and does not in itself amount to the approval of an apparition. Nor should devotion to the well be confused with a supernatural guarantee on every witness of the pilgrims.
The coordinate used on the map corresponds to the cartographic sanctuary on OpenStreetMap (way 556601158). The tab names Augustów-Studzieniczna to facilitate the identification of the place and retains the distinction between the accuracy of the location of the sanctuary and any statement about the origin of the image or the effects of the water.
Prayer can present the well as an occasion to remember the baptism and mercy of God, always asking Mary for her intercession. Water is not offered as a substitute for faith, medical care or sacramental life.
