Origin and history

According to the tradition / legend, the origin of the Shrine of Svatý Hostýn dates back to the invasion of the Tartars in Moravia in the 13th century, around 1241. Before the advance of the invaders, the inhabitants of the region would have fled to Mount Hostýn seeking refuge and, harassed by the lack of water, begged for the help of the Virgin Mary. The legend tells that then miraculously sprout a spring and a strong storm, interpreted as God's intervention by Mary's intercession, forced the Tatars to withdraw. From this episode was born the veneration of the Virgin as Protectora y Victoriosa, memory of your help in the face of danger.

As for the documented historythe sources point out that already in the 16th century there existed in Mount Hostýn a first chapel, mainly linked to the workers of the nearby mines. This chapel was destroyed in the 17th century, but after the Thirty Years' War the place of worship was reconstructed and an image of Mary with the Child Jesus was placed there for the first time, consolidating the mountain as a place of Marian pilgrimage. Over time, Svatý Hostýn became the most visited Marian sanctuary in Moravia and one of the main ones in the current Czech Republic, with a continuity of pilgrimages that comes to this day.

The image and the sanctuary

The main image is that of Our Lady of Svatý Hostýn, also called Virgin Protector o Virgin Victoriosa. This is a Eculture located on the main altar of the basilica. The Virgin appears standing, holding in the arms of the Child Jesus; the Child is represented with a lightning in the hand, symbol of the divine intervention that disperses the enemies and protection from the dangers, in memory of the storm that, according to tradition, saved the refugees from the Tatar attack. The statue was erected as a thanksgiving for those who found refuge and protection in the place. The specific material of the size is not clear in the sources consulted; therefore, there is no detailed technical description (wood, stone or other).

The main sanctuary is the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (In Czech, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Svatý Hostýn is spoken of in the tourist and ecclesial sources.) The temple dominates the top of the mountain, and stands out for its two front towers y una cúp a very visible, which has become a characteristic element of the landscape of Moravia. The western cover is decorated with an outstanding mosaic of Our Lady of Hostýn, made up of some 260,000 small crystals from Italy. The whole of the sanctuary also includes a cross-way with thirteen modernist chapels, designed by the architect Dušan Jurkovič, which structure part of the devotional journey of the pilgrims. The sources present it as basilica, that is, it has the title of a minor basilica, although the accessible documentation does not explain the exact date of this concession or the corresponding pontifical decree.

Sponsorship and coronation

Svatý Hostýn is described in sources such as the most visited pilgrimage place in Moravia, and one of the most important in the Czech Republic, immediately after the sanctuary of Velehrad. This in fact gives him a character of Marian sanctuary principal de Moravia, although they do not contain in the sources consulted detailed legal formulas on a specific canonical patronage (for example, as the principal patron of a particular diocese). It is, in any case, a focus of devotion that attracts faithful from all over the region and the country.

As for the canonical coronation, the Marian and Catholic sources point out that the image of Our Lady of Svatý Hostýn was solemnly crowned the 15 August 1912. The crown, adorned with numerous precious stones, was blessed in Rome by Pope Saint Pius X, which indicates the pontifical recognition of this Marian devotion. This coronation is remembered as a moment of great joy for the sanctuary and for the faithful who come to it.

Party and devotion

The date that appears to be most clearly linked to this advocation is that of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, August 15around which the coronation of 1912 is located. It is reasonable to consider that the main feast of the sanctuary is celebrated precisely in connection with this Marian solemnity, given the official dedication of the basilica to the Assumption and the concentration of seasonal pilgrimages; however, the sources consulted do not expressly contain a different "feast" on another date, so there is no specific day different from the general liturgical calendar of the Assumption.

In the devotional plane, Svatý Hostýn is presented as one of the most visited pilgrimage places of Moravia and "one of the most picturesque" in the country. Thousands of pilgrims go to the mountain every year, especially in summer times, to participate in masses, Marian processions and other celebrations. The relief of the place favors the romerías a pie, and the path of Jurkovič is part of the spiritual itinerary, along with access to the basilica, the veneration of the image and the visit to the source linked to the legend. Devotion focuses on the Virgin as Protector in times of war and danger and as a Mother who helps materially and spiritually, in memory of the foundational episode of the Tatar invasion.

Link to the Rosary

It does not contain a specific historical or regulatory relationship between the advocation of Our Lady of Svatý Hostýn and a co-fradia, archcofradia or particular initiative linked to the prayer of the Rosary (for example, it is not documented that it is an official sanctuary of a co-fradia of the Rosary, nor a feast of its own strictly rosarian).

However, as in most major European Marian shrines, the Rosary It is part of the ordinary devotional practice of the pilgrims: it is integrated into the processions, Marian vigil and times of personal prayer before the image of the Virgin, especially around the solemnity of the Assumption and the great pilgrimages. The character of the Virgin of Hostýn as Protector and Victorious In the face of the evil, it is naturally harmonized with the tradition of the Church that the Rosary presents as a "spiritual weapon" and a school of contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with Mary: by meditating on the joyful, luminous, painful and glorious mysteries, the faithful can revive, at the foot of Mount Hostýn, the history of salvation in which Mary continually intercede in favor of her people.

Documentary update: pilgrimage and coronation in Hostýn

La information about the pilgrimage site of Svatý Hostýn It describes it as a Marian center of the Hostýn mountains, with basilica, access roads and pilgrimage practices. The chronicle of Czech Television document the coronation of the image on August 15, 1912 and collect the historical estimate of more than 100,000 attendees that day.

The image of the Child holding the rays and the account of protection against the Tatars are part of the iconography and the tradition of Hostýn. The coronation and inflow of pilgrims attests to the devotional history of the sanctuary, but do not automatically turn the foundational legend into a recognized apparition or miracle.
