Documentary update

Local sources describe Sveta Gora as a pilgrimage center on Skalnica hill near Nova Gorica. The tradition of the place attributes to the pastoralist Urška Ferligoj an apparition of Mary in 1539 and relates that experience to the request to raise a church and pray for mercy. The documentation itself distinguishes this devotional account from the data that can be followed historically: the civil authorization to build in 1540 and the delivery, in 1544, of an image of the Mother of God painted by the Venetian Palma el Viejo.

Spiritual attention was entrusted to the Franciscans in 1565. Emperor Joseph II abolished the pilgrimage route in 1786 and forced the religious to leave the place; the pilgrimage was then restored and the Franciscans returned in 1901. The image was crowned in 1717, which is why devotion invokes it as Queen of the Holy Mountain. In 1907 Pius X granted the temple the title of basilica, according to the historical source consulted.

The basilica was destroyed during World War I. The current set, including the Franciscan monastery, was raised between 1924 and 1928 and preserves the memory of the previous stages. Therefore, in this document, public veneration, coronation, basic title and continuity of the pilgrimage are presented as institutional history; there is no specific decree declaring supernatural the apparition attributed to 1539.
