Origin and history

According to available sources, the devotion to Our Lady of Tà Pao is linked to the installation of a great image of the Virgin Mary in the mountain of Tà Pao, in the district of Tanh Linh, province of BÃ nh Thuğ n, in southern Vietnam, in the context of the Vietnam war. The statue was inaugurada en 1975shortly before the end of the conflict, as a sign of hope for the local Catholic population.

After the political changes of 1975, the place remained practically abandoned for years and access was very limited. From the end of the 1990s, and especially in the 2000's, there was a rebirth of the pilgrimage, with a growing flow of faithful who went back to the mountain to pray to the Marian image, to make it "one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage places in Vietnam." Today the shrine of Tà Pao is known as a place of comfort and reconciliationwhere faithful come from different regions of the country.

They do not include, in the sources consulted, stories of apparitions nor a structured legendary tradition (as is the case, for example, with La Vang); Tà Pao's devotion is based mainly on the presence of the statue of the Virgin on the mountain, the praying experience of the people and the testimony of graces received. Any more detailed narrative of apparitions or wonders is not documented in accessible ecclesial or historical sources.

The image and the sanctuary

La image of Our Lady of Tà Pao is described as a big white statue of the Virgin Mary, of approximately three meters high, located on the slope of the mountain of Tà Pao. It does not contain precisely in the sources the material (probably white-painted stone or cement), not a detailed iconographic description (exact position of the hands, attributes, inscriptions), beyond its clearly Marian character and its prominent location in the mountain landscape.

The place of worship is known as Marian shrine of Our Lady of Tà Pao, situado en la montaña de Oo Pao (The Ling Ling, Ping Shun). The whole is made up of the statue, outdoor prayer zones and host structures for pilgrims; it is a pilgrimage sanctuary dependent on the local Church. It is not clear from the sources consulted that the temple or assembly has been raised to the title of minor basilica, ni declarados National sanctuaryIt can therefore be said that there is no official recognition as a national or basilica sanctuary in the available documentation.

Sponsorship and coronation

Our Lady of Tà Pao is considered one of the most loved Marian advocacy in southern Vietnamwith a large influx of pilgrims from different dioceses, and a strong arraigo in the province of Ping Shun and surrounding areas. However, there is no official proclamation of the employer of a specific diocese, of the province or of a national character; therefore, on a possible patronage no consta specific legal declaration.

As for a crown of honor, does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Tà Pao (i.e. an official act on behalf of the Pope or by his mandate with the decree of the Holy See). If there were devotional or local coronations, they are not clearly documented in accessible ecclesial or journalistic sources.

Party and devotion

The sources agree that the sanctuary of Tà Pao lives a great pilgrimage on the 13th of each monththe day when many faithful gather to participate in the Eucharist, pray and present their intentions to the Virgin. In addition, 8 December, solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in the Latin Roman rite, a great Marian feast with special influx of pilgrims is held.

No if you honor it fecha propia de fiesta litúrgica specific to this advocation other than 8 December; it is understood that the main celebration is linked to the Immaculate Conception and the monthly pilgrimages. The sanctuary is described as one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage places in Vietnam, although the sources do not give exact official figures of assistance; it does insist on its character as a place of comfort, reconciliation and inner healing for many people marked by the wounds of war, family divisions and social difficulties.

The devotion is expressed in the participation in the Holy Massthe Community prayer, the presentation of votes and the thanksgiving for favors received. The location on the mountain gives the place a climate of retreat and penance, favoring the sacramental confession and reconciliation between individuals and communities.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted do not offer a specific and documented relationship between the advocation of Our Lady of Tà Pao and apparitions explicitly related to the prayer of the Rosarynor a particular instruction from the Virgin about this prayer, as it does in other advocacy. Therefore, no consta a unique historical link with the Rosary beyond the usual Marian practice.

However, the Rosary It is part of the ordinary spiritual life of Vietnamese Catholics and pilgrims who come to the sanctuary. There, as in so many other Marian shrines, the Rosary accompanies the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ's life with the eyes of Mary, holds the hope of the faithful in the midst of the trials and becomes a school of forgiveness and reconciliation, very consistent with the character of Tà Pao as a place of peace. In this way, although there is no foundational fact explicitly linked to the Rosary, the advocation of Our Lady of Tà Pao is naturally integrated into the great Marian tradition of the Church, in which the Rosary is one of the privileged ways of honoring the Virgin and asking for her intercession.
