The place is mentioned among the "outstanding Marian sites" of Germany, such as Sanctuary of Our Lady of Dolores in Telgte, near Münster, Westphalia, and it is indicated that the pilgrimage dates "probably from the end of the 16th century," which points to a previous consolidation of devotion before the organized form of 1651.

The image and the sanctuary

The image of Our Lady Dolorosa of Telgte (in German, Painful Mother of God of Telgte) es una Pietà: represents the Virgin Mary sitting with the dead body of Christ on her knees, in the iconography of the Mater Dolorosa. This is a wood size polychrome, Gothic style, dating around 1370, which makes it one of the oldest representations of this kind in Westphalia. The image is venerated as miracle and has been the center of numerous testimonies of graces received, the basis of the consolidation of the sanctuary as a place of pilgrimage.

La Pietà se venera en la capilla-santuario de Telgte, known in German as Wallfahrtskapelle or pilgrimage chapel. This chapel is very close to the parish church of the place and is part of a small religious set organized to welcome the pilgrims, with spaces for prayer, the celebration of the Eucharist and confession. The sources consulted do not mention that the temple has the title of minor basilica nor the rank of national sanctuary; its character is that of diocesan Marian shrine of the diocese of Münster, with great projection in the region of Westphalia.

Party and devotion

La devoción a la Dolorosa de Telgte is expressed throughout the year, but has particularly significant moments associated with Marian liturgy. The local tradition celebrates Mary in this sanctuary with special emphasis on the dates of August 15 (Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) and 15 September (Memory of Our Lady of the Dolores), in line with the nature of universal Marian apvocation and piety. The specific sources on Telgte do not explicitly collect a liturgical decree of their own with these dates, but are mentioned in the devotional tradition as days to honor the Painful Mother of God.

The most characteristic feature of devotion is the great annual pilgrimage from Osnabrück to Telgtedocumented from 1651. Every year, thousands of faithful walk the road between Osnabrück and Telgte, praying and singing, to venerate the Virgin Dolorosa and present her intentions. This pilgrimage has become one of the most important religious manifestations of German Catholicism in the north, and is part of the ecclesial and cultural identity of the region. Along with other German Marian pilgrimages, such as Kevelaer or Altötting, the sanctuary of Telgte is cited among the great Marian piety centers of the country.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted on the sanctuary of Telgte highlight the pilgrimagethe veneration of the Pietà y la devoción a la Mater Dolorosabut they do not explicitly document a unique and own association with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, the Rosary's cofradies specifically linked to the Rosary's own image or parties of the sanctuary). It should therefore be indicated that there is no specific documented link between this advocation and the Rosary, beyond general Marian practice in shrines.

However, from the point of view of Marian spirituality, the Dolorosa de Telgte is deeply harmonized with the Rosaryespecially in the painful mysteriesin which the passion of Christ is seen from the hand of Mary. The image of the Pietà It makes visible what the Rosary meditates on: the surrender of Christ to death and the compassionate participation of the Mother in her redeeming suffering. The Rosary's Prayer to the Painful Mother of God of Telgte allows one's own life to be united with the pains of Mary and Jesus, and to receive from the Dolly Mother comfort, strength and paschal hope.
