Virgin of Tomalos
Torrecilla Pattern in Cameros (La Rioja)
On a peñasco by the river Itruce, the shrine of Tomalos keeps the patron of Torrecilla in Cameros, whose primitive Gothic size - that of Zigalares - is preserved today in the parish museum.
Origin and history
The shrine of Tomalos is raised on a peñasco, next to the Itruce River, in an area of strong landscape presence. The whole is a hermitage of the 16th and 18th centuries, with elements of the time of the Catholic and Baroque Kings. The early home of the Virgin was a small chapel that housed a Gothic size called "Zigalares," today preserved in the Parish Museum of the church of San Martín de Torrecilla in Cameros.
The Virgin of Tomalos is the patron of Torrecilla in Cameros. The devotion is expressed in two Romries: April 25, from the hermitage to the parish of San Martín, and September 8, in the reverse sense, the date of his feast. The image has been guarded for centuries by the family of the santero.
Canonical coronation and detailed critical chronology: not recorded in the sources.
