Marian devotion
Our Lady of Good Health of Vailankanni
«La Lourdes de Oriente» · India
On the coast of Tamil Nadu, the Vailankanni shrine brings together pilgrims from all over India - and from other religions - who come to the Virgin of Good Health to ask for healing and protection.
Origin and history
The devotion dates back to the time when Portuguese traders and Catholic communities from southern India raised Marian chapels on the coast of Tamil Nadu. The memory of many favors - especially curations and aid in danger - was set around Vailankanni, who consolidated the title "Good Health" and a growing influx of faithful.
Over the centuries, the modest sanctuary was extended to become one of the main pilgrimage centers of Asia, raised to the lower basilica. The multilingual celebrations culminate in the great feast of September, which is also attended by many non-Christians attracted by the fame of graces and cures.
