Santa Maria la Real de Valdedios: the abbey of the Valley of God

Villaviciosa, Asturias · A house of Santa Maria between silence, stone and road

In a valley collected from Asturias, between oaks, chestnuts and the rumor of water, two churches have more than a thousand years of faith. One is San Salvador, the little preromanic temple that everyone calls "The Conventin." The other is St. Mary the Royal of Valdedios, the great Cistercian abbey dedicated to the Mother of the Lord. They should be distinguished to understand the beauty of the whole: they are neighbors and share landscape, but they were born in different times and respond to different stories.

Two temples, one Christian memory

San Salvador de Valdedios was consecrated in 893. His tombstone recalls the presence of seven bishops and preserves the memory of the Assyrian monarchy in one of the last great testimonies of preromanic art. Three centuries later a Cistercian monastery dedicated to St. Mary began to rise with him. The proximity gave the small temple its popular name "El Conventin," but Santa María la Real should not be confused with it.

The documentation published by the monastery itself places the Cistercian foundation in the times of Alfonso IX and Berenguela. On November 27, 1200, the Monarchs gave to the monks the inheritance of Boiges to establish the abbey. In 1201 the Latin name appears already Vallis Dei"Valley of God," from which Valdedios comes. The inscription of the northern eardrum sets the beginning of the works of the abacial church on 18 May 1218, during the episcopate of John of Oviedo and under the abbot John IV. It also retains the name Gualterio, which is uniquely valuable for being the only medieval master known by its name in Asturias.

The necessary precision: Santa Maria la Real de Valdedios is not a Marian apparition or an advocation arising from a miraculous account. It is a monastic church dedicated to Saint Mary, specifically linked to Our Lady's Annunciation. His Marian wealth is born from prayer, liturgy and consecrated life sustained for centuries.

The austerity of the Cyster as a way to God

The church of Santa Maria belongs to the late-century and responds to the sober nature of the Cister. It has a basic Latin cross plant, three ships covered with cross vaults at different height, a slightly prominent transept and three semicircular apses facing the east. Its lines are clean and the ornamentation contained: architecture is not intended to distract, but to order the space for praise.

When it was completed, it was the church of the greatest dimensions raised up until then in Asturias and maintained that condition until the building of the Gothic cathedral of Oviedo. The monastery became one of the most important Cistercian centers in the region. Fire, floods and transformations forced successive works; the medieval cloister was replaced since the 16th century by another Renaissance and classicist route, concluded in 1777. These wounds did not erase the identity of the place: each reconstruction speaks of a community that reerected its house.

Mary in the Valley of God

Cistercian spirituality looked upon Mary with special affection. The austerity of their monasteries was not poverty of meaning, but an invitation to seek the essential: listening to the Word, obedience and inner availability. On that horizon, the Annunciation is a complete school of Christian life. Mary listens, asks without closing her heart and gives her freedom to the plan of God: "Be done in me according to your word."

Santa Maria la Real thus recalls that the true "Valley of God" is not just a landscape. It can also be the heart that is allowed to dwell for Christ. The stone oriented towards the light, the silence of the ships and the rhythm of monastic prayer lead to the same disposition as the Church considers in the Virgin: to receive the presence of the Lord and to guard it faithfully.

Valdedios can be read as a parable: a hidden valley becomes the house of God when a community responds, like Mary, with availability and perseverance.

A story of abandonment and return

The Cistercian community occupied the monastery until the 19th century. The group then met other uses, including diocesan seminar, educational centre and workshop school. In 1992, a Cister community returned; it was later inhabited by other religious communities. Since 2023 there lives the Community of the Presence of the Lord, made up of consecrated men and women who develop a praying, fraternal and evangelizing life.

The church of St. Mary has regained worship and the monastery again offers silence, prayer, retreat and reception. The community explains its vocation through three evangelical places: Nazareth, as a school of family life in the presence of Jesus; Bethany, as a house that hears and hosts the Lord; and the Upper Room, as a place of Eucharist and perseverant prayer with the Virgin Mary. It is therefore not a monument that has been stopped in the past. History continues where the faith for which it was raised is celebrated again.

Valdedios and the pilgrims

The monastery also retains its vocation for hospitality. Its hostel welcomes pilgrims with credential in a separate natural environment, and Tourism Asturias integrates it into the network linked to the Caminos de Santiago. A variant allows you to approach Santa María and San Salvador in the connection between the Camino de la Costa and the Camino Primitiva.

He who enters as a visitor can admire art; he who arrives as a pilgrim also discovers a pause. Mary then appears as a companion of the road: she does not retain the walker, but guides him to Christ. Monastic hospitality prolongs this maternal gesture through a bed, a shared table, silence and the possibility of praying.

How to approach with respect

The set offers cultural visits to San Salvador, the church of Santa María and the cloister, with audio guides and guided modalities. It also maintains liturgical celebrations, retreats and spiritual exercises. As the hours may vary, the updated information of the monastery should always be consulted before the movement. The visit reaches its deepest meaning when it keeps the proper silence of a place of worship and distinguishes the cultural curiosity from the prayer of those who live there.

Prayer to Santa Maria in Valdedios

Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord,
that you received the Word in silence
And you answered with a heart available:
Teach us to make our life a valley for God.

Custody of those who pray and work in this house,
He accompanies the pilgrims who walk their ways,
comfort those who seek rest
and lead to your Son those who come with thirst for hope.

That the ancient stones of Valdedios
remind us of the faithfulness of so many generations,
and that we also know how to rebuild,
persevere and say every day:
"Be done in me according to your word."

Saint Mary the Royal of Valdedios, pray for us. Amen.
