The venerated image in Velankanni represents the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in arms, dressed with sari de estilo indio; in contemporary devotional descriptions it usually appears with a white or golden attire, underlining its inculturation in Indian piety. The accessible documentation does not contain the material of the image or a more precise technical description of its seniority, so such data should be considered no consta.

Documented extension: the sanctuary and the letter of 2024

The recent documentation of the Holy See helps to clarify what can be said about Velankanni. L’Osservatore Romano On August 9, 2024, he informed the Bishop of Tanjore of the letter of the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, dated August 1 and approved by Pope Francis. The letter expresses the Pope's appreciation for the sanctuary and recognizes the spiritual fruits that pilgrims experience there. The text speaks of the constant action of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary, also in the reception of people who do not receive the Catholic sacraments.

This pastoral recognition does not in itself amount to a statement that each account of the apparitions of the 16th century is supernatural. The letter recalls devotion and its fruit, but it retains the distinction between the institutional history of the sanctuary, the tradition transmitted by its pilgrims and the specific canonical judgment on extraordinary accounts. Therefore Velankanni is presented as a Catholic sanctuary of veneration allowed and promoted, without attributing to the letter a formula that he does not use.

The same Vatican article summarizes the tradition of the boy carrying milk and of the encounter with Mary and the Child. This is an ancient devotional account: the existence of devotion and its sanctuary is documented, while the supernatural details belong to the traditional testimony and do not become facts proved by the mere spread of history.
