Origin and history

Velehrad is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in the Czech Republic, linked to the memory of the saints Cirilo y Metodio y a la Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The current complex emerged as Cysterciense monastery, founded in the 13th century, considered the oldest Cistercian monastery of Moravia.

According to the tradition local, the place of Velehrad is related to the old headquarters of the Great Moravia and to the missionary activity of the saints Cyril and Methodius in the ninth century, so the Marian sanctuary is also perceived as the spiritual heart of the western Slavic Christianity and the center Cyril-Methodian of the country. This connection with the Great Moravia belongs more to the realm of historical-religious tradition than to a fully demonstrated archaeological identification.

La documented history notes that the monastery and the early church of the Assumption of the Virgin were built in Romanesque-Gothic style around the middle of the 13th century. Later, following fires and devastation (especially in the time of the Husito wars and later in later conflicts), the temple was rebuilt in Baroque style, preserving foundations and earlier elements. In the 20th and 21st century, Velehrad has consolidated himself as a great national sanctuary, with celebrations that emphasize both its Marian character and its importance for the Czech and Slavic Christian identity.

The image and the sanctuary

The main Marian invocation is Our Lady of the Assumption of Velehrad (Panna Maria Velehradská), venerada en la Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption and of the Saints Cyril and Methodius. The basilica is a baroque church, raised on ancient Roman foundations, with a wide ship, rich decoration, lateral altars and a prominent presbytery, in which Marian dedication is combined with the memory of the apostles of the Slavs. The whole of the monastery and the basilica is classified as an important national monument and is the main pilgrimage center of the country.

The sources consulted do not provide a detailed and unambiguous description of a unique Central Marian image (exact type, material, author or date) associated under the specific title "Panna María Velehradská"; the presence of altars, images and Marian decoration within the temple, with iconography of the Assumption of the Virginbut without precise and documented data on a specific sculpture or icon with a coronated main image range. Therefore, no constawith sufficient documentary support, the exact description of a unique "official" image beyond the general iconography of the venerated Assumption in the basilica.

Sponsorship and coronation

Velehrad is considered one of the major Marian and national pilgrimage centres of the Czech Republic, with a strong Cyril-Methodian dimension; various sources present it as "the most important pilgrimage church of Moravia," with meaning for the entire Czech nation and for the Slavic world. At the formal level, its importance is indicated as great national sanctuary and spiritual center, although no documents have been found that confirm a specific legal-canonical patronage (for example, as an official patron of a diocese) under the exact title "Panna María Velehradská"; instead, the place is clearly identified as the main Marian sanctuary of Moravia and reference for the whole country.

On the canonical coronation of a concrete image of Our Lady of the Assumption of Velehrad does not contain a documented canonical coronation in accessible sources (sanctuary, official tourist information, devotional materials and regular collections of coronated images). No reliable date, pontiff or decree data have been found related to a specific canonical coronation of this advocation in Velehrad.

Party and devotion

La main party linked to the basilica and the sanctuary is celebrated around the 5 July, solemnidad de San Cyril and San Metodiowhich in the Czech Republic is a national holiday and concentrates great pilgrimages to Velehrad. In addition, by the Marian title of the temple, the solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (August 15) is also particularly significant, although the sources consulted highlight above all the high concentrations in the Cyril-Methodian festival.

Velehrad acoge anualmente multitudes de peregrinos from both the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries, being considered one of the country's most important places of pilgrimage. The pilgrimages combine devotion to the Virgin of the Assumption with the veneration of the saints Cyril and Methodius, the prayer for the unity of Christians and the remembrance of the Christian roots of the nation. Solemn masses, processions, outdoor celebrations, youth meetings and acts of a national and ecclesial nature are held. Between popular traditions, include walking paths from various regions of Moravia, family celebrations, confessions and renovations of the consecration to the Virgin and the idea of the holy apostles of the Slavs.

Link to the Rosary

The specific sources on Velehrad do not explicitly mention a unique practice the exclusive of the Rosary prayer associated with a fellowship or a concrete historical promise under the title "Our Lady of the Assumption of Velehrad." Therefore, no consta a particular historical relationship of the sanctuary with a rosarian institution of its own comparable to other classical Marian shrines of the Rosary.

However, as great Marian sanctuary and place of intense prayer, the Rosary is a regular part of the devotional life of the pilgrims and communities who come to Velehrad, integrated into the pilgrimages, vigil and celebrations in honor of the Virgin of the Assumption. The prayer of Holy Rosary, considering the mysteries of the life of Christ with the eyes of Mary, it is naturally harmonized with the double character of the sanctuary: on the one hand, the contemplation of the Assumption as the glorious culmination of the life of the Mother of God; on the other hand, the memory of the saints Cyril and Methodius, who brought the Gospel to the Slavic peoples. In this way, the Rosary in Velehrad helps to unite the the memory of salvation, la intercession of Mary y la Christian identity of the Slavic peoples, aspects that constitute the spiritual essence of this place.
