Main data
Origin and history
La Church of the Immaculate Conception of Wanjin (also known as the Wanchin church / basilica) is considered the oldest Catholic temple preserved in Taiwan, with the construction of the current building dated in 1870. Since the mid-19th century, the area of Wanjin (in the current municipality of Wanluan, Pingtung County, South Taiwan) was an important Dominican missionary center in the province of the Most Holy Rosary (of Spanish origin, then based in Manila), within the Apostolic Vicariate of Formosa.
La documented history indicates that Spanish Dominican missionaries, dedicated to the evangelization of the hakka populations and other communities of the south of the island, established there a Catholic community and raised a temple dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The building was expanded and restored on several occasions; a major remodeling took place in the 20th century, and in 1984 the church was raised by the Holy See to the title of minor basilica, becoming the first basilica of Taiwan.
As regards local traditions, various sources mention that Wanjin was soon considered a "bastion" of Catholicism in Taiwan, and that many faithful from other regions came there especially to entrust themselves to the Immaculate in times of difficulty; however, there are no reports of Marian apparitions or specific foundational miracles that are officially recognized by the Church. It does not contain a tradition of origin linked to a concrete apparition, but to the Dominican missionary work and the spread of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
The image and the sanctuary
The venerated advocation is Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Wanjin, represented by a Western-style Marian image, in the way of the classical iconography of the Immaculate (young Mary, standing, with a clear robe and blue blanket, associated with the mystery of her unsin Conception). The accessible sources mention the devotion to the Immaculate in Wanjin but do not describe with documented accuracy the material (wood, plaster, etc.) and all the iconographic details of the main image; therefore, these data are not safely recorded.
The sanctuary is officially known as Basilica of the Immaculate Conception of Wanjin (Wanjin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception), located in the village of Wanjin, Wanluan municipality, Pingtung County, South Taiwan. It is a temple of Latin riteof the Catholic Church. Architectural, it is distinguished by a marked style hispano-misionero (inspired by the baroque and neoclassical Spanish tradition, adapted to local reality), with sober facade, bell tower and decorative elements specific to the Dominican missions. The basilica is considered a historical symbol of Catholicism in Taiwan and an important place of national pilgrimage.
Sponsorship and coronation
The Immaculate Conception of Wanjin is a Marian main reference for South Taiwan Catholicsespecially in the county of Pingtung, and the basilica acts de facto as diocesan Marian shrine and a prominent spiritual center for the corresponding diocese. The sources consulted present Wanjin as a "historical bastion" of Taiwanese Catholicism and as one of the most important places of Marian devotion in the country, though do not specify a formal canonical patronage (e.g. as an official county or diocese patron, approved by decree). Therefore, it is only with certainty that it is devotional, not a legal title of patronage.
On the canonical coronation of the image of the Immaculate of Wanjin, there is no clear reference in the accessible documentation to a decree of the Holy See or to a canonical coronation ceremony with pontifical delegation. Accordingly, in accordance with the above rules, does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
La main party of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Wanjin is celebrated the 8 Decemberin line with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church of Latin rite. There is one of the most important Marian processions in Taiwanwith a great participation of the faithful.
Several sources describe that, every year, thousands of Catholics from all over the country go on pilgrimage to Wanjin for the feast of the Immaculate, with solemn procession, Mass Eucharist and expressions of popular piety that combine elements of the Catholic tradition with local cultural features. The December procession, in which the image of the Virgin is carried through the streets of the village, has become a visible sign of the historical presence of the Catholic faith in Taiwan and an important religious and cultural event for the community.
Throughout the year, the Basilica receives pilgrims from different Taiwanese dioceses and from Catholic communities of Chinese and hakka origin, as well as visitors interested in the history of Christianity on the island. Wanjin is considered a place of reference to Marian devotion and local Catholic identity, heir to the Dominican mission and the reception of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
Link to the Rosary
The specific sources on Wanjin do not indicate a individual and own relationship of this advocation with a fellowship of the Rosary, promise or apparition explicitly linked to the prayer of the Rosary. For example, there is no official designation as "Our Lady of the Rosary of Wanjin" or a special privilege related to the recitation of the Rosary.
However, since the basilica is the fruit of the Dominican missionand that the Order of Preachers has historically been one of the great diffusers of the Rosary in the Church, it is reasonable to say that the Marian piety of Wanjin is deeply linked to this prayer. Although there is no specific data that documents it in a unique way for this advocation, in a Dominican Marian sanctuary the recitation of the Rosary is a regular part of devotional life: it accompanies processions, Marian vigil and preparations for the December 8 feast.
More broadly, the contemplation of mysteries of Christ's life with Mary in the Rosary deeply harmonizes with the title of Immaculate ConceptionThe Rosary recalls the plan of salvation in which Mary, preserved from all sin from her conception, is fully available to God and guides the faithful to a life of grace. Thus, even without a specific tradition of its own, the Rosary presents itself as a privileged way of living and deepening devotion to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Wanjin.
