Origin and history

No particular legendary tradition is preserved about a miraculous origin of specific advocation Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Wichita; the title is part of the great universal devotion to the Immaculate Conception, proclaimed dogma by Blessed Pius IX in 1854 and extended as a feast to the entire Latin Church on December 8.

In the plan of the documented history, la actual Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the mother church of the Diócesis de Wichita, erected by the Holy See in 1887 (segregated from the diocese of Leavenworth; today Kansas City in Kansas). The first cathedral was the church of Santa Maria, until the Catholic community of Wichita decided to raise a new temple dedicated to the Immaculate Conception as the episcopal seat and main Marian sanctuary of the city and the central-southern area of Kansas. The present cathedral, in a Renaissance or neo-Renaissance style, was built in the early 20th century; the consecration and dedication of the temple as a cathedral of the diocese correspond to this period. The exact dates of the first stone and consecration are not safely recorded in the sources consulted, so it is simply indicated that it is raised in the first decades of the twentieth century.

Throughout the 20th century, the cathedral was consolidated as the main Marian temple of the diocese and the center of the state of Kansasthe place of the main diocesan celebrations in honor of the Immaculate Conception and other Marian solemnities, especially under the Latin Catholic rite.

The image and the sanctuary

The advocation is venerated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, catedral de la Diócesis de Wichita (Kansas, United States). It is a temple of Renaissance / Neo-Renaissance style, of basic plant, with large central ship, marked cruise and dome outstanding in the skyline of the city. The interior is dominated by a sober decoration, with a large main altar, vitrals and elements of the sacred art of the 20th century. It does not know that the temple has the title of minor basilica ni de National sanctuary; its liturgical range is that of diocesan catedral. There is also no formal declaration as a diocesan Marian sanctuary, although it actually functions as the main Marian center of the diocese.

In the interior are venerated several representations of the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception, generally in the form of an image de bulto redondo o de altarpiece / painting which presents young Mary, standing, with white robe and blue cloak, hands together or on her chest, as is usual in the iconography of the Immaculate. The specific material (wood, plaster, marble or other) and the authorship of the main image are not safely recorded. The iconography responds to the eptidine tradition: Mary without blemish, on the middle moon and with apocalyptic symbols (sun, stars), associated with the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

Sponsorship and coronation

The title of Immaculate Conception is a patron of the United States at the national level, but it is not clear that the concrete imagen de Wichita has been officially declared patron of the city of Wichita and the state of Kansas. If it is recognized liturgically as holder of the cathedral and therefore, as Principal patron of the Diocese of Wichita as a mother church and episcopal seat (in the sense of patronage of a cathedral title). There are no other civil or state recognitions specifically linked to this image.

As for his canonical coronation, in the diocesan documentation, in the repertory of advocations and in the Catholic press consulted, there is no reference to a canonical coronation ceremony of the Marian image of the cathedral of Wichita. Therefore, according to the available data: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

La main party of the advocation is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, el 8 Decemberwhich is also a feast of precept in the Catholic Church in the United States and a patronal solemnity of the temple and of the diocese. This day a particularly solemn liturgy, often presided over by the diocesan bishop, is celebrated in the cathedral with great participation of the clergy and the faithful.

There are no precise numerical data of influx, but the diocesan experience indicates a remarkable participation of faithful from all over the diocese, and not just from the city of Wichita, who come in the form of diocesan pilgrimage or visits organized by parishes and movements. Throughout the year, the cathedral functions as a reference place for Marian celebrations (Holy Mass, Marian consecration, celebrations of first communions and confirmations with Marian accent), as well as for special events in Marian months (May and October). There are no unique popular traditions (massive external processions, typical dances, etc.) that are typical of this advocation in Wichita, beyond the usual processions and liturgical acts of an American cathedral.

Link to the Rosary

No se documenta una specific or exclusive link between the advocation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Wichita and a particular brotherhood, crusade or movement of Rosary (for example, as a national sanctuary of the Rosary), there is no official title related to the Rosary. In the ordinary sources of Marian devotion and the history of sanctuaries there is no special practice in this temple, beyond what is common in a diocesan cathedral.

However, the Rosary is a natural place in the spiritual life of the cathedral: the Immaculate Conception is one of the great Marian mysteries implicitly considered in the joyful mysteries and in Marian piety in general; the prayer of the Rosary before or after the Mass, especially in the months of May and October, and around December 8, is part of the ordinary devotional profile of many parochial and cathedral communities of the Latin rite. In this context, the Rosary is presented as the way of contemplation of Christ with the eyes of Mary Immaculate, and as a school of purity and grace, in continuity with the dogma that the cathedral of Wichita celebrates as its own in its title.
