Origin and history
Since April 2, 1968, and for about three years, crowds of Christians and Muslims saw a luminous figure of the Virgin on the domes of the Coptic Church of Santa Maria in the Cairota district of Zeitoun. The first witnesses were two Muslim mechanics. An ecclesial commission investigated it and the Coptic Pope Cyril VI confirmed it by official statement on 4 May 1968; it was also endorsed by the Coptic Catholic Patriarch. It is one of the best documented modern Marian apparitions.
