Our Lady of Zocueca
Dance and Battle Pattern · Jaén
By the Rumblar River, the shrine of Our Lady of Zocueca welcomes the patron of Bailen, also declared patron of the historic battle of Bailen in 1808.
Origin and history
The devotion to Our Lady of Zocueca has been documented since the 15th century. The sanctuary is of medieval origin, renovated in the 15th century; the current building was erected in the first third of the 17th century, with a sumptuous baroque shrimp added in the 18th century. Tradition dates back to the early times of Christianity, without documentation to confirm it.
The present Romeria, from the parish of the Incarnation of Bailén to the sanctuary, was born at the end of the 19th century as a thanksgiving of the hortellans for getting rid of their gardens from a lobster plague. In 1925 he was named patron of the battle of Bailen, in memory of the victory of 1808. It's been canonically crowned.
The exact year of canonical coronation is not safe in the sources consulted.
