Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Ace
The Great Sanctuary of the South West · Cangas del Narcea
On the top of the Azebo saw, on the Cangas del Narcea, we will venerate Our Lady of the Azebo, held after Covadonga by the Marian sanctuary of the greatest devotion of Asturias, the goal of the great Romeria of the "Day of Promises."
Origin and history
The place had an old chapel under the title of Our Lady of Virtues. The origin of the sanctuary is linked to a first miracle that occurred on September 8, 1575 - the healing of Mary of Noceda, paralytic -; when "multiple miracles" were spread through the Principality, the hermitage became a great center of pilgrimage and the present temple, with a Latin cross, was raised, concluded around 1590. Since then, the title of Our Lady of the Acebo has been imposed.
The image is a Romanesque size of the 13th century; the Baroque altarpiece was carved by Manuel Ron (1687-1691) and gold by Juan Menéndez Accelulana (1709). It is especially invoked by patients of paralysis and venerated as a patron of the winged cowboys. His great pilgrimage of September 8, "the day of promises," and the "day of offerings" of the following Sunday, with the blessing of the cattle, express their deep rural root.
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
