Our Lady of Carbayu
Langreo Patron (Asturias)
On a hill that dominates the Nalon Valley, the Baroque shrine of Our Lady of Carbayu guards the patron of Langreo, whose name evokes the "carbayu" (oak) of its founding legend.
Origin and history
The sanctuary is a baroque temple of the 18th century, built on an earlier Romanesque temple; it retains a baroque altarpiece of 1730 and an image of the Virgin in the hornacin of the façade. It is declared Good of Cultural Interest and is one of the most important religious monuments of Langreo.
The local legend says that, while the sanctuary was being raised elsewhere, the Virgin appeared to the workers on a "carbayu" (oak) to indicate her will for the temple to be built at the present site, from where the council is dominated. Patrona de Langreo, congregates every 8 September the most traditional Romeria of the municipality.
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
