Origin and history

The image and the sanctuary

There is no single sanctuary: the Virgin of Carmen is the owner of several districts of Adeje, where there is usually chapel, hermitage or parish with this advocation. The accessible documentation describes devotion more than a comprehensive list of temples, so the detailed identification of each image and of each temple does not contain in detail the sources consulted.

Sponsorship and coronation

She is a patron of several districts of Adeje, according to the official municipal heritage website. It also highlights its protective status of sailors and those who were embarking from the southern coast of Tenerife. A canonical coronation does not consist of the sources consulted.

Party and devotion

The party is held 16 July, memory of Our Lady of Carmen. In Adeje, there are a number of city holidays around that date, with popular processions and seaworthy events. The municipal heritage blog highlights that the Virgen del Carmen is the center and the reason for the parties of these enclaves and has marked the identity of the neighborhoods, especially among the people linked to the sea and the traditional trades.

Link to the Rosary

The sources consulted on Adeje speak of the devotion to the scapular and the feast of July 16, but do not mention the co-fradies of the Rosary; therefore, a documented link with the Rosary does not contain. Even so, by its Carmelite root, Carmen's advocation traditionally accompanies the prayer of the Rosary, a prayer that the family of Carmelo has always spread and which is the most unique to this image.

A flower for the Virgin

It offers a simple prayer to this advocation. Pray a Hail Mary for Spain and for the peace of the world.

Pray Hail Mary
Sources: tradition of the sanctuary, diocesan information and Wikipedia in Spanish. The distinction between popular piety and documented ecclesial history is specific to this fact sheet; extraordinary accounts are presented as devotion and not as doctrinal pronunciation.
