Our Lady of Carmen in San Nicolás de Bari
Place: Plaza de Domingo Alvarez Acebal, Avilés, Asturias, Spain
Celebration: 9th and Feast of the Virgin of Carmen, July 16.
In Avilés, devotion to Our Lady of Carmen has a concrete expression in the parish of San Nicolás de Bari. The Archbishopric of Oviedo documented in July 2026 the celebration of the ninth and the presence as preacher of Monsignor Braulio Sáez García, barefoot Carmelite and bishop emeritus of Oruro. This fact sheet refers to this community and should not be confused with the parish and fellowship of the Virgin of Carmen de Salinas, in the neighbouring council of Castillón.
La novena de Avilés
During the days that prepare the feast of July 16, the parish brings together the faithful to contemplate Mary under the title of Carmen. The ninth of 2026 was collected by diocesan communication through an extensive conversation with its preacher. His testimony links the avilean celebration with Carmelite spirituality and with more than fifty years of episcopal mission in Latin America.
The news makes it possible to safely affirm the present reality of devotion, but it does not make it necessary to invent an ancient foundation for the ninth or a local apparition. It is a living parish celebration, rooted in the universal tradition of Carmel and welcomed by a historic church of the city.
From Mount Carmelo to Christian life
The title of Carmen refers to Mount Carmelo, in the Holy Land, a biblical place associated with the prophet Elijah. At the end of the 12th century, hermits were established there seeking a life of austerity, contemplation and fidelity to God under the protection of the Virgin Mary. From that fraternity was born the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The scapular became one of the most well-known signs of this spiritual family. Well understood, it is not an amulet or an automatic guarantee: it expresses belonging, subsidiary trust in Mary and commitment to live according to the Gospel. Authentic devotion leads to prayer, sacraments, conversion and service of the neighbor.
San Nicolás de Bari, house of the celebration
The present parish of San Nicolás occupies the ancient church of the Franciscan convent, in the historical heart of Avilés. The City Council includes it among the main temples of the city and protects its heritage. Its walls have for centuries accompanied the prayer, art and civic life of the villa.
In this context, the ninth of Carmen is not a museum piece. The presence of the faithful, the preaching and the Eucharist again give meaning to architecture: the heritage serves a community that listens to the Word of God and learns from Mary to follow Christ.
A teaching born of the mission
Monsignor Braulio Sáez recalled in Avilés the simplicity, patience, hope, generosity and ability to share that he had found in the communities of Bolivia. His experience illuminates the feast of Carmen: to take advantage of the Mother does not mean to be locked up, but to be available to proclaim the Gospel and to accompany people from different cultures and circumstances.
Carmelite spirituality unites contemplation and mission. Silence before God widens the heart for service; prayer does not turn away from human difficulties, but teaches them to dwell with hope. Thus can Avilés live his ninth: like a school that leads from Mary to Jesus and from the temple to the brother.

Prayer
Our Lady of Carmen, Mother and sister on the path of faith, accompanies the community of San Nicolás de Bari and the whole city of Avilés. Teach us to listen to Jesus in silence, to receive him with love in the Eucharist and to serve him in every brother. Protect the people of the sea, comfort those who suffer and make us humble witnesses of hope. Amen.
