Origin and history

La advocación de Our Lady of Carmen de Colón It is linked to the Carmelite presence and the strong devotion to Carmen on the Panamanian Atlantic coast, especially in the city of Colón, where it emerged as a diocesan reference Marian centre. It does not include, in accessible sources, a Foundational legend specific (apparition, original miracle or prodigious finding of the image); the local tradition rather emphasizes the character of patron and protector of the city and its families, especially of the sailors, traders and inhabitants of the harbour environment, typical of the devotion to Carmen in coastal areas.

As regards documented history, the temple of Carmen in Colón developed as parroquia urbana and was later erected as Diocesan Sanctuary Our Lady of Carmenas their official channels indicate. The presence on social networks of the sanctuary, with an intense pastoral life (catechesis, liturgical celebrations, Marian parties), shows that it is a consolidated center of worship in the Diocese of Colón-Kuna Yala, with the acvocation of Carmen as one of the most important Marian axes of the city. They do not contain, in the sources consulted, exact dates of the foundation of the parish or of the decree of canonical erection as a sanctuary.

This sanctuary should not be confused with other Carmen churches in Panama (for example, the Carmen parish in Via España, Panama City) or with homonymous temples in other countries. The advocation here treated is the venerated in the Colón, Panama, en el Diocesan Sanctuary Our Lady of Carmen.

The image and the sanctuary

The available sources do not offer a detailed and documented description of the image (material, author, date). The photos of the official profiles show an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of a traditional type: the Virgin in majestic attitude, with the Child Jesus in arms and the scapulario del Carmen as a central element of the iconography, according to the classic Carmelitan model; however, when it does not contain official technical data, the material, authorship and dating cannot be specified with certainty. Therefore, it can only be said that it is a Marian image of Carmelitan devotional style; the rest of the data is not recorded.

The temple bears the official name of Diocesan Sanctuary Our Lady of Carmen (Colón - Panama). It is located in 14th Street, Melendez Avenue, Colón Cityaccording to the information of the sanctuary itself and of the location services. A review of the same sanctuary indicates that the building "measures 35 and a half meters long by 16 meters wide," which presents it as a temple of significant dimensions within the urban centre. The architecture, according to the images, corresponds to a large temple, with a single longitudinal ship, with simple façade and clear Marian identification, suitable for great parish and diocesan celebrations.

In the information available no consta the temple has received the title of minor basilica ni que sea National sanctuary; appears explicitly as diocesan sanctuary, dependent on the Diocese of Colon-Kuna Yala.

Sponsorship and coronation

The sources consulted do not explicitly indicate a decree formal de patronazgo civil or ecclesiastical (for example, "principal patron of the city of Colón" or "patron of the diocese"). However, the name as diocesan sanctuary and the intense pastoral life make Our Lady of Carmen a first-order Marian reference for the city of Colón y para la Diocese of Colon- Kuna Yalaat least in the devotional field. In the absence of official published documents on precise legal patronage, beyond the centrality of your sanctuary, it should be indicated: does not contain a canonically defined patronage in the sources consulted.

As regards canonical coronation, no reference has been found in diocesan decrees, Catholic press notes or official reviews to a canonical coronation (neither pontifical nor diocesan) of the image venerated in the Sanctuary of Carmen de Colón. Therefore, according to the requested rule: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

La main party of Our Lady of Carmen is celebrated universally the 16 July, day of the Virgin of Carmen in the Roman calendar; this date is also the one that is lived as a central celebration in the Diocesan Sanctuary of Columbus. The publications of the sanctuary show an intense Marian life, especially in the July y en el month of May (Mary's month), with special events, serenades and catechetical and festive activities around the Virgin. In particular, a serenata al santuario and popular celebrations in honor of the Virgin of Carmen, a sign of a living devotion.

The sanctuary also develops a wide labor catequéticawith groups of children and young people of First Communion and Confirmation catechesis, who participate in Marian activities (stands on apparitions of the Virgin, celebrations of the month of Mary, etc.). This formative dimension shows that devotion to the Virgin of Carmen de Colón is not limited to the patronal feast, but is extended throughout the year in the parish and diocesan life, integrating liturgy, catechesis and popular piety. There are no official figures of influx, but the character of diocesan sanctuary and the images of mass celebrations make it possible to state that it is an important meeting point for the faithful of the city and its surroundings.

Link to the Rosary

Available sources do not explicitly mention a peculiar practice of the Rosary uniquely linked to this advocation (for example, specific co-fradies of the Rosary of the sanctuary, documented promises or rosarian pilgrimages). It should therefore be stated: there is no specific and documented link with the prayer of the Rosary beyond the ordinary Marian practice of the Church.

However, from Marian and Carmelitan spirituality, the Rosary occupies a natural lugar junto al scapulario del Carmen: both are simple ways to meditate on the life of Christ with Mary and to live the Marian consecration of Carmel. In a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Carmen, the prayer of the Rosary is integrated in an organic way in:

– la preparación espiritual a la fiesta del 16 de julio (novenas, vigilias, serenatas marianas); – las celebraciones del mes de María y la catequesis de niños y jóvenes, donde la figura de la Virgen es presentada como Madre y Maestra en la fe.

Although no exclusive practices of Columbus are documented, the devotion of Carmen naturally invites Mary to contemplate the mysteries of Christ through the Rosary, as part of the life of piety that feeds the Marian identity of the Diocesan Sanctuary Our Lady of the Carmen of Columbus.
