Origin and history

Documented history

La devoción a la Virgin of Carmen He arrived in Chile with the missionaries and religious orders from the colonial period; the Carmelite advocation spread widely since the 17th century and was consolidated as one of the most loved in the country. In the whole nation is venerated as Queen and Mother of Chile, Patrona and Generala Jury of the Armed and Order Forcesrecognition of the historical experience of its protection in events critical to independence.

En Chiloe and particularly Ancudthis devotion is inserted in a markedly Marian context, with numerous parishes, chapels and communities dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen and other Marian advocacy. The Church in Ancud actively participates in the national celebrations in honor of the Virgin of Carmen, as seen in the commemoration of the centenary of her coronation as Queen of Chile.

Tradition and local practice

At the local level, various Ancud communities recognize the Virgin of Carmen as Pattern of chapels, neighborhoods or sectors, as in the case of the Lowwhich celebrates its patron party on July 16 with great participation of the faithful. These celebrations often include solemn Mass, procession and acts of popular piety, integrated into the religious calendar of the city.

It does not include, in accessible and verifiable sources, a differentiated own history under the formal title "Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Ancud" which is distinguished from the national vocation of the Virgin of Carmen in Chile; rather it is the same Carmelite advocation, taken with special fervor by the local Church.

The image and the sanctuary

The image

The sources consulted do not accurately describe a imagen titular única under the title "Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Ancud" (exact type, material, author or date of realization). The local celebrations use images of the Virgin of Carmen with the usual iconography: Mary with the Child Jesus in arms, both carrying the scapular of Carmen, characteristic sign of this Marian spirituality. Beyond these general features, no consta a detailed technical description (size, artistic style, authorship) for a specific image of Ancud.

The temple or main place of veneration

In Ancud there is an intense parish and community life, with several temples where the Virgin of Carmen is venerated; however, the available sources do not clearly identify a “Marian shrine oficial” diocesan or national of the Virgin of Carmen in the city.

– La Diócesis de Ancud organiza y anima procesiones y actos de oración con la Virgen del Carmen, utilizándola como referencia mariana central en celebraciones por la Iglesia y por Chile. – Comunidades como la de Bajo (Ancud) celebrate the Virgin of Carmen as a patron and celebrate her feast and procession in her local temple.

It is not known that in Ancud there is a temple with the pontifical title of minor basilica, ni un National sanctuary o officially erected sanctuary for the Virgin of Carmen recognized at the level of Episcopal Conference; therefore, it must be said with rigour: no consta that specific recognition for a "sanctuary of Our Lady of the Carmen of Ancud."

Sponsorship and coronation

Patronage

At the level of Chile, Virgin of Carmen is officially recognized as Queen and Patron of Chileand how Patron and Generala Jury of the Armed and Order Forces. These titles illuminate all the Carmelite devotion in the country, including that of Ancud.

En el ámbito local:

– Diversas comunidades de Ancud la veneran como Pattern of their chapels or sectorsas the community of Low, que celebra a “su patrona Nuestra Señora del Carmen” el 16 de julio. – No consta en las fuentes consultadas un decreto formal que la nombre canonical patron of the whole city of Ancudalthough in pastoral practice he is given a very widespread and significant devotion.

Canonical coronation

It does not contain, in accessible ecclesial or historical sources, a specific canonical coronation of an image entitled "Our Lady of the Carmen of Ancud". Chile held the Centenary of the Coronation of the Virgin of Carmen as Queen of Chileof which communities of Ancud joined, but this commemoration refers to the national image of the Virgin of Carmen, not to an image of Ancud.

It should therefore be noted with rigour:

> Canon coronation: there is no documented canonical coronation of a specific image under the title "Our Lady of the Carmen of Ancud."

The sources consulted on devotion to the Virgin of Carmen in Ancud do not explicitly mention a unique practice of the Rosary proper to this local advocation (for example, the Rosary fellowship specifically linked to the image of Ancud, or official times that identify it as "Rosario del Carmen de Ancud").
