Origin and history

The sanctuary crown a mountain that dominates the village of Mangalde. The sources point out that their origin is very old - before Portuguese nationality itself, according to tradition - but the successive remodeling and reconstructions have erased the primitive vestiges, so that their current configuration corresponds to the XVIII- 19th centuries.

The ensemble is articulated as a pilgrimage sanctuary: a granite (step) with four chapels and rock tiles that narrate episodes of the life of the Virgin, culminating in the upper hermitage. It's a public interest monument. His great rosemary is celebrated on 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, with ascending to the mountain, prayer and coexistence; the place is also a famous lookout over the region.

"Our Lady of the Castle, the strength and protection of your people, pray for us."
