Santa María del Coro
Patrona de San Sebastián (Gipuzkoa)
In the Old part of San Sebastián, at the foot of Mount Urgull, the basilica of Santa María del Coro guards the patron of the city, before which the solemn Salve is sung every 14 August.
Origin and history
The present temple dates from 1750 and rose on an ancient Romanesque church, so it is considered the oldest church in the city; the sources speak of a Romanesque origin of the late 12th century, transmitted as a divulgative historical account.
The Virgin of the Choir is patron of San Sebastián. Its most characteristic feature is the Salve a la Virgen del Coro every August 14, before the Assumption, with great presence of faithful and the accompaniment of the Orfeon Donostiarra.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
